Your opinions on the grade of this 1795 Large cent.

jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,720 ✭✭✭✭✭
I saw this coin a few weeks back and purchased it for potential re-sale.

I am not that experienced with large cents, especially the early years and would like some comments as to grade and whether it is worthy of sending in for certification. and if so which service ?

It has a a few bumps and marks especially on the reverse, but has a nice overall look on the obverse with a strong date?

thanks

Jim - sorry, but from the image, it looks environmentally damaged or corroded.

This is going to sound harsh and I don't mean it as such, but, please don't throw any more money away on that coin.

  • Well, I have a little experience with large cents. I’d say it looks like a F12. It might get net graded, though, for the digs. VG08, maybe???

This coin has a lot of problems in my opinion. To send it in for certification would result in BB from NGC or PCGS and Anacs would net grade it.

    Looks like a Sheldon 78 Rarity 1.

Looks cleaned and as if corrosion was removed,

You might get a net good 6 with anacs, but i could be way off.

Just my opinion, I am no expert.

    Thanks Guys,

I usually dont waste time with this type stuff, but I picked it up fairly cheap, cause I thought it was neat being a 1700 piece.
Bought it more to show/swap around locally, than anything?

I knew PCGS or NGC would not grade it to start with, but know I won't waste time sending it to ANACS before selling it either and save the $35.00

I would still lean toward sending it to ANACS. These coins are often damaged and still fetch some good bucks. The authentication alone would add value.

If you plan on selling it, that's a tough call.

Considering the year it's not so bad but sometimes a slab with the word "Corroded" isn't a great selling point either.

sharpness of vg8, net value of g4-, but i still like it.

  • Net G6/G4

I have at one time also purchased a few !8th century cents just for the novelty of it. Some were reasonably nice, some were real dogs, but they were all fun to accumulate.
