  • It looks nice - but is there ANY chance you could give us a slightly BIGGER picture of the obverse??? image The reverse looks very nice - doesn't look cleaned at first glance - I would think that it's at least VF quality.

LOL - I didn't even make the connection between the title and the post! DOH!
  • I believe it is a bust dollar, and it looks like it is in a graded slab, Can't make out the date.

    Koinkrazy,

If this is representative of your knowledge of Seated coinage (as well as Bust coinage), then I would respectfully suggest that you pursue a different area of numismatics, like ancients! image

Seriously, a bigger picture of the obv would be helpful. But, I can tell you right away that the coin looks like it has at one point in the distant past been lightly cleaned. But, a bigger pic may help determine if the coin is still very nice!

It almost looks like a draped bust dollar to me, the obverse picture is rather small. I can not see the date but am guessing 1798-1803? If it is 1804, my opinion is it is FAKE.

    koinkrazy,

I agree with EVP that the coin appears to have been cleaned (not at all unusual for a piece of this type). Grade-wise, it looks like a low end XF that might be downgraded to VF due to the cleaning.
  • There looks to be evidence of a past light cleaning from the obverse. I'd say at least XF40. Very nice piece.

I can't fathom why anyone would think the coin is nice. It is undisputably unoriginal and has the look of a low-end product specimen -- regardless of the grade or if it's been harshly cleaned.

Even if this coin were slabbed by either PCGS or NGC, it'll trade sight-seen at a discount. Greysheet bid would be a great price for this coin (for the seller). Let's also not forget that this coin is in a SEGS holder, which would give it another discount due to holder bias.

I think it has been cleaned at least once at some point like most bust dollars.
It is pretty hard to find one that has not been cleaned at some time.
Even the dark ones could have been cleaned 100 years ago and retoned.

I must concur with EVP and Coinguy. While the coin does appear to retain low-end XF details, there is a "flatness" to the surfaces that suggest it was cleaned at one time. Natural retoning after a cleaning can reduce the appearance of the cleaning quite a bit. So, in my opinion, this coin appears to have been cleaned either harshly enough or recent enough such that the cleaning is still quite evident.

The coin in question is an 1800 B-17, BB-196 12 Arrows variety. Nice, original-looking specimens of this variety are sufficiently common that a cleaned specimen would trade at a discount. Here is an original-looking NGC-graded XF-40 specimen of the same variety for comparison (photo from the Heritage archives):

This coin realized $1,725 at auction, January, 2002.
