I like that blue on that coin. Oddly enough, I also have '43-S with that shade of blue, but slightly more coverage, and it was also slabbed by NGC. I have heard some people speak of a theory where the toning may be accelerated by the NGC holder (older NGC holders, I think) in coins with this color on them. I don't know if this is correct or not, but it's interesting.

  • Tom,

You may be right. My coin is in an old NGC holder. The one with the light green border.

  • My other dime purchase today. I took this with a reveal bulb. Doesn't quite show the luster it really has.

    Nice job.

Is blue hard to find on silver coins?

Your '45 looks very satiny (I like it) on the obverse but I don't see a reverse image in your subsequent post.

WOW! Nice reverse! I really like the reverse!image

In my experience I have found that relatively pure blues are difficult to find on naturally toned, 90% silver coinage. I try to buy nicely toned coins that have lots of blue on them.

  • fcloud,

I've seen blue on silver coins, but usually in conjunction with other colors. I found this one interesting because blue is the only color.

Nice coins Android! Merc's are such a wonderful design. I might make that my next series.

Did you chisel that split band on the coin in your signature image. Boy oh Boy!

This one that I bought for 1 dollar has some very nice blue in it, my crappy ol scan though makes the coin look
uglier then what it is, all the luster is lost in the scan....Now hopefully the toning is real...

Lucy, the toning on your Roosevelt definitely looks real to me and looks like it was stored in a Whitman Classic holder for a number of years.

  • Here is a Blue Merc for ya

Tom is familiar with this one, and can tell you, the poor scan doesn't even describe the pure metallic blue that jumps off this coin, which has tons of luster.

Interesting color and very attractive. You usually don't see blue without pink or red shades on the coin too.
  • Nice coin Andy! What's with all the 43S's with blue toning I wonder?
