    Amazing! I love these coins!
If "Moon Money" means well over $500.00- I 'might' agree. Under? The bargain of the show.

  • WOW!!! It looks like it has its own lighting on the reverse! NICE find!

the moon money guy wanted TRIPLE what I paid for mine.
  • JB - Wonderful coin! - But I wonder - doesn't the fact that there were two others just like it bother you just a teensy bit? I've seen the same thing at other shows where they have ASE's and even though they're slabbed, they look exactly alike! I know this happens - but it's just ironic.

  • when i say they look alike I mean very similar but not exactly. There was also 2 purple ones like it there. Anaconda has one that is similar to mine but with a bunch of specs in the rim toning.

    does it bother me.

    NOPE
  • I know a dealer that has dozens of those. I wouldn't buy a single one because they all look "rusty"`

The coin is real. The color is real.
Wonderful coin! It makes sense that if coins are stored in the same method they would tone somewhat alike.

I see where you have listed yours on eBay. I bet it doesn't last long. It's a beautiful coin!

I have proofs going back to the 60s and none of them have toned this way. What's done to cause this?
  • image Im trying to be light hearted about this JB and I wish you personally well. I think the coin is beautiful and probably worth the money for someone who likes to accumulate the best they can find. This one is definately the best someone can do. So here are my thoughts, im a gold buff anyway, so here goes. Alchemy is alive and well. Goodness, I was told that they never found a way to turn various types of metal into gold. Here is living proof that the chemists have accomplished their feat! Any time you can take a 25.00 coin and sell it for 800.00 that is "alchemy' at its best! By the way whoever did this to this coin deserves the profit he made on it! It is truely a work of ART!

I understand where you are coming from but as I like to say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I collect art also, so beautiful colors interest me. The reason the price tag is where it is because I know there are others who enjoy colors as I do.

one other thing, so you are telling me when someone makes a Moragn proof that has been graded PF69 and is being sold for $95,000 then they are creating "alchemy" because they have turned a $1.00 coin into $95,000?

    << <i>Alchemy is alive and well. >>

So you don't feel as if you are all by yourself on this one...for the record I totally agree.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out that I do like that coin so I can see why one would purchase it. Nice coin.

clw54- Good question. One theory (and one I agree with) is your earlier proofs are 90% silver while these Modern Eagles are 100% silver- thus tone 'easier'.

These things are .999 pure silver and tone very quickly and with different colors and patterns than you would usually see on .90 silver issues.

Good point, Pat, but there's still some questions. Have all of them turned colors, or just a few? Considering the price, there must not be many that have changed like this. If they all did, they'd be cheap. Since it's likely there's only a few, what conditions were they subjected to to cause the change?
  • image All im saying is that this is a PROOF. Proof silver eagles came in the plastic capsule inside the flip top box. One would have to wonder where it would tone like that and in the exact same manner on both sides as well. What I am saying is that for a proof silver eagle to tone like this one in the few short years since 1986 and in the plastic capsule no less is very hard for me to swallow. But I would like to add again that I do think it is a work of ART and as such it was created in a short time by human agency(the toning). If one wants to pay that much money for that kind of art, I dont mind. I just think it ought to be called what it is and that is precisely this "Lab created work of Art". For those of you who think that this particular coin would tone like this naturally, you need to do some homework. Read a few Sherlock Holmes books and then think these things through. You might come to a different conclusion.

  • Did anyone see the ( TBT ) TONEKILLER and GSA GUYS table. Awsome toned Morgan's, Jefferson's and Kennedy's WOW ! ! ! Even Russ would droool.....

Anaconda also had some beautiful coins. Very impressive..

  • eagle7, So are you telling me PCGS and NGC cannot tell AT? I agree it has been put into probably a album that does this to it but people also put Morgans into albums and they tone like this one......

    image

    or this one

    image

the above two came from bag toning but below is album (this was Anacondas coin that I bought from him)

    and the reverse

  • I have a 1990 ANACS PF68 HVY CAMEO Silver Eagle that I purchased a year ago, that has light violet toning within Miss Liberty's cape, head and floral's, down to her midsection.
The reverse has a mixture of medium purple, yellow, red and orange rim toning with the tip of the eagles' tail being gold in color.
The rest of the coin is brilliant, and heavy cameo'd. I have been holding on to this coin thinking someday it would tone more than it already has, but so far no such luck. Maybe it should have resided outside of a holder a while longer?

That's the beauty of these. The variables must all come into play just so. Silver will tone- that's the easy part. It is the attractive COLORS we seek that are difficult to replicate. Nature certainly has the upper hand when it comes to turning these wonderful coins out.

But, to answer your question with a more pointed reply: If they remain in their mint capsule they will not tone. Most have been stored in their original mint packaging.
Also, dip these, even once, and you lose the chance for these to naturally tone. Once the original skin is currated off- that's it. That is my experience with these.

  • image By the way, JB you and the other guys are about to get me hooked on these darn toned coins. Im already wanting a Morgan with a 50 percent obverse light pastel rainbow. Until I started looking at these things on these threads I had almost gotten over my love for the Morgan Dollar. Now I am almost drooling again. I may do some business with you pretty soon!

No lab is necessary. These coins will tone if you look at them cross-eyed. You can pretty much put them anywhere(drawer, sock, jewelery box) where they are exposed to the air and normal heat and humidity. You need do nothing else.

I'd bet that it was taken from the capsule and put in something- it is possible that it was an envelope, but I have another theory...

You know those cases for display? That could do it- one of my two toned ASEs (really great colors, but with fingerprints- not too bad in the long run) - it has been in a case and surrounded by foam... voila... TONING! image

I should add that you may not get the same results as the coin pictured, but it will tone.
  • image JB, I think some of these "lab created works of Art" are so beautiful that the grading services slab them any way. And I want to be quick to add, If I were in charge of one of the services so would I. But to be honest with you, I think they do know there is a serious question about it. They just choose to ignore it. Rightfully so!

  • gsaguy,
that one might have gone through your well supplied toned hands (natural toned hands that is) but the code on the pricing label is my own that I am sure no one knows what the letters stand for.

eagle- I'd agree with you if you changed the word 'know' to suspicious. I don't believe PCGS will holder ANY coin they know to be AT. Otherwise that would be akin to PCGS holdering a tooled Bust dollar because the re-engravings are so professionally done it deserves to be holdered!

PCGS may not be sure and then either holder or not (and, I suspect NOT, much more often), but if they know- then that coin is not getting into their plastic.

    JB,

That 83-O you bought from Anaconda was one that jumped out at me in his case because it's as about as bright as you'll see with album toning. If you're at the show tomorrow, check out the album toned piece in my toning set. It has a similar look.

    Nice buy!

sorry, that is a beautiful coin and no way it is AT. Sure it was stored in a folder, or envelope or something, but that color wasnt applied, it formed.

Sure wish I had one like it image
