OK Toning gurus, answer this.

What is the chemical or chemical reaction that causes toning? I've heard sulfur or oxygen. On an AT coin, what is done to the coin? Is more than 1 chemical reaction involved. What amount of time is needed to tone artifically? I know its been discussed before but it's a lot of work searching.

Oxygen in the air reactions with the silver of a coin to create silveroxide, which appears as a white, fine powdery surface patina. Sulfur in the air and in paper products react with the silver of a coin to produce silversulfide, which creates a layer of patina on the surface of the coin. The varying degrees of silversufide create the rainbow effect on a coin. The silver oxide remains white to deeper powdery white.

If you already know its been discussed many times then I suggest that you get to work and use the search feature.

Yeah, it's pretty tough to type in the word "toning" and hit the button.

    Dog,

I thought about doing that, but "it's a lot of work".

Thanks for reminding us you were never new to this FORUM
  • Good to see such friendly people today. If you don't want to help out with an answer, don't waste your time typing in a negative answer. Some of us are still learning to use all the features here. Or maybe we'd like a fresh response.

To Dimetime and MrSunshine; I reserve the option write what I did in that first post of mine to most anyone who phrased a question on the Boards that way, regardless if they were registered for three months (as Dimetime) or since the Boards opened.

I read the initial post as something along the lines of:

"I have several questions and I know they have been discussed before but I don't feel like using my time or effort to find the answers, therefore, I will ask you to expend your time and effort to re-write those answers for me or to link me to the proper places where I can find those answers easily."

While that in itself is not a terrible thing to write, it does infer that the thread author's time and effort are more valuable than other members time and effort. It might not be at all what the thread author meant, but it certainly can be taken that way. I also find it interesting that MrSunshine can find the time to give me a small lecture on Board etiquette while not at all helping the supposed "newb" who needed the help in the first place.

not that there could possibly be anything new to add, but silver chloride is also white in appearance.

  • Tom, here is my side of this. The term "gurus" usually refer to an expert in an area. It's not slanderous in the least, but a compliment. Yes I'm new here, so I haven't solved all the ways to locate areas of interest. I tried a search but kept getting nothing. I thought the coin forum was a place where a member could ask a question and have another knowledgeable collector help with an answer. I'm hardly the lazy type, just was hoping for a simple response. When I become more familar with how do access all the features here I won't post questions that are a waste of anyones time. But once again, no one has to respond to my questions that they believe are from a "too lazy" member. Thanks for making a new member feel welcome here. Have a nice day.
