My 3 New Toned Morgans .....(edit with a ?)

Just received 3 more toned Morgans in todays mail. Here are some photos. The first is raw and everyone said it was AT. Still think so? I think it is now that I see it. It is still pretty though.

Using the WAG method, I don't think the first coin is "intentional" AT. I think it was stored in a crappy, wet environment housed in something that bled all over it.

Yes I recall this raw coin and might tend to agree with Russ on this one. I think I mentioned this in the original thread when you posted this coin. Can't remember for sure. The rev doesn't look bad looks like it was stored in an album. Sorry but the obv looks a mess. Looks like some kind of environment damage. Except for the blue on the hair above Liberty's forehead which imo was put there.

I wouldn't bother trying to get it graded, and would use it for a reference piece. Also with the prints on it might give you an idea how to spot them.

    The other coins look nice.

I still don't think the first one would pass at a grading service.
The 80 S is interesting, can you give us a description?
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • The 80s is very nice. It is completly purple color toning and looks just like the picture. There is a darker part that goes over the face kind of like a mask. A white strip going through the coin as well. I attached another photo that show a little better. It was very difficult to get the purple tone color to show up. Most of the time it looked black.

  • Number 1 looks as if it was stored in a sweet potato at about 350 degrees for 4 hours!image

Thanks for the update. I really like the 80-S. That's cool the way the white streak go through the middle of it.

  • I am editing my post with a question.

The first Morgan pictured most everyone thinks it is AT. My question is this, if I send it into pcgs do they still slab it if it is AT? Can you ask for it to be slabbed even if it is?

Then if they dont do that do I still get charged the grading fee if it is body bagged?

    Thanks for the help.

  • PCGS and NGC will not slab anything that remotely resembles AT toning. Their reputation is at stake so they won't risk it - even at the chance of knocking out genuinely toned coins that make them nervous - as such it'll get body bagged, no explanation, no money back - do not pass go - and well you know the rest.

Lori, I know you like that coin, but save your money and nerves and just put it in an album or something. Or experiment with it, and see if any of it washes off. Could be a good learning experience. I'm not saying it will wash off, but it would be interesting if it did.

They will keep your $$ and send your coin back in the same flip you sent it in if it NGs.
Hey guys, I just got this and it looks weird, think it will wash off?

<< <i>Hey guys, I just got this and it looks weird, think it will wash off? >>

No, cause it looks like what was going to wash off already did. (Wink)

I thought you hated prints, Am I seeing print lines in left field?

Sometimes it washes off so nicely that it get's slabbed into a tidy NGCMS65 holder image

Frank, did it wash off so easy as not to leave any dark areas like real toning would do?

  • Steve - it came off amazingly easy - I was stunned - the one mark that you see on the coin by Liberty's ear is actually a metal impurity imbedded in the coin - but one dip was all it took - didn't impair the brilliance or anything.
