It has happened at almost every coin show that I have ever been to.image
  • Honestly, no. Since I collect anything and everything, there is usually something in my collection that everything else goes with. imageimage

absolutely. I have made four or five pure impulse purchases just on seeing an amazing looking original coin. Usually they are so nice that I have bought them without even knowing what the listed retail or wholesale prices were.

Usually the coins value doesn't exceed $100 or so. but did buy an original chocolate colored 1828 Half cent in XF and stared at it for two weeks straight amazed at how cool it looked.

Yes, I don't collect the commemoratives, but I bought a brilliant 1936 Oregon trail in MS65. It is a beautiful design and an interesting message on the coin.

Yep, all the time. But do I buy it? Only once or twice. I'm not a big lincoln collector (except for a full 1909-1975 series in circulated -- some in fair/ag) but I saw a 09 VDB in 65RD that I had to have. It is nice enough to be 66, I think. It's got just a bit of green over his mouth, too, which is amusing. But the coin is really nice and grabbed me. But I try to keep impulse purchases down now.

Yep. Then a year later I'm saying why did I buy this junk I don't collect this and sell it. Usually @ a loss. image
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Sure has. Just came thru a "Britannia" phase where I bought a '99,' 00, '01,'02 as fast as I could. I still think it's the most beautiful coin I own. Twowood
  • Yep - got a number of 'solo' coins that I just like the look of.

Happens to me all the time. Sometimes it takes all the willpower I have to stop pulling the trigger.

I walk into the show repeating to myself..."I'm only looking for classic commems...I'm only looking for classic commems...I'm only looking for classic commems..." Then...WALLOP! I start drooling over a 1917 Type I SLQ MS-65FH. Then it's on to something else...then something else. If I'm lucky, I might just find a commem I'm looking for, if I can tear myself away from everything else.

    Cheers,

  • Yes, but I’m trying to get out of the habit of buying coins on impulse. That way, when I see a coin that does fit into my collection, I’ll have enough money to buy it! The Heritage Exclusively Internet Auctions are my enemy in this regard.

  • Never thought I would ever buy a $3.00 gold!

And I agree, the Heritage Auctions are a weakness. I have sworn off them for a while to curb those impule purchases. (I do not seem to have the same problem with ebay auctions&gtimage

Yes and almost did it again today. Here is what appears to be a monster Barber Quarter in something like Proof 65. Coin looks wonderful but:

    1) It is not slabbed
    2) I swore off buying beautiful coins just because they were beautiful. I don't have enough money for that!

The coin eventually sold for around $815 on ebay.

How many of you think I could have sent it in to PCGS or NGC, gotten it graded as a Proof 64 or 65 and made out like a bandit?

  • Mac,

I have so much single stuff laying arond that it is starting to look like a slightly unfinished collection.

I can not resist a good deal on any coin, that I do not have.

No wonder, I will never finish my collections in this lifetime....LOL
