Dipping Question

GaCoinGuyGaCoinGuy Posts: 2,763 ✭✭✭✭
I have several proof 69 Kennedys that have a light hazing...........I am trying to decide whether to dip them myself or send off for 'fixin'. A couple of them have a good shot at 69DCAM, but for the haze. Any advice will be appreciated. I am planning on 'experimenting' on some really ugly cam Kennedys I have.

A quick dip then a wash a couple of seconds later in Ivory dish soap then a clean rinse with an air dry wouldn't hurt them and would probably remove the haze. I would do it.

  • Go to this link and follow Coin Cleaner directions...
    Link

Under "Things You Need" on the left.
  • If you have a really nice coin and dip it in this high powered stuff, all you will have is a dipped coin. Nothing special. Acetone is the only
thing safe to use for us amateurs.

  • Not if you follow directions. This stuff works great on hazy proofs. I had 2 that were so hazed over you could hardly tell what type of coins they were and I dipped them for about 5 seconds, rinsed them in a soap solution and then rinsed them under luke warm water and dried them and they look like they just came from the mint.

Yeah....use acetone on a proof and you'll end up with junk. Acetone will forever marr the mirror finish of a proof.

The kind of dip to use would be either jewel-luster or EZ-clean. Both are about the same if used properly. The key is to leave the dip on the coin ONLY long enough to take off the residue (15 seconds or less), then immediately wash it off with a base soap, and ivory liquid works perfectly.

DO NOT do this with copper - it will discolor the coin and you'll end up with junk. It's only safe to do with other metals.
