Know one knows who he really was so not much of a story other than what you already know.
Maybe he is one of the characters below.

I pick door #2. He has that innocent but sinister look. "Who?....Me?? No!! Mini-Me!!"

Yes I remember that he produced passible quality gold counterfeits some years ago and for some strange reason decided to sign his work with a tiny microscopic Omega symbol which made the identification of a coin being spurious easy.

I don't remember seeing any further details as far as where they were produced or if he was ever caught or made any other "Omega" pieces.

  • Omega fakes show a capital omega incised into the coin(or rather into the positive from which the rev die was made) within the space bounded by the eagle's claw. Pretty easy to see with the naked eye.

  • In the PCGS book, it says that they don't know if the omega symbol was intentionally put there or just a flaw in the die. It also says that these counterfeits were so good, that some of them may even be in some famous collections.

  • Mr Omega also did three dollar gold pieces, I believe it was the 1882. On those the Omega is inside the loop of the R in Liberty.

    1) There is quite a bit of "talk" that some of these made their way into slabs.

    2) According to some TV show that featured NGC reps, I believe they stated that the way they caught it was that there were "too many" nice HRs coming in to being graded all at once. One of the graders there noticed the flaw and called it something. Another grader thought it looked like the Omega symbol and that's what stuck.

Omega High Reliefs have been around for many, many years. Way before the grading services.

Easy enough, IrishMike, just start buying some PCGS or NGC slabs and you will be sure to find an Omega coin.image
  • TLC did a special on US gold coins and how there made, along with the story line, there was a segment on the coins you mentioned, this was broadcast maybe a year ago?. I kinda remember them mentioning that he (she) had sold a guestimated 20 million worth before it was discovered.

Maybe visit TLC and see if there is an archive for the show.
