What is a "holey" 1856 Flying Eagle worth?

dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,735 ✭✭✭✭✭
My dealer just returned and had purchased a complete set of FE/Indians and Lincolns. When he said the FE/Indian set had an 1856, my eyes sort of lit up, then he said it was holed. Who would drill a hole in one of these?

The hole, which is at the top has been crudely filled, and he is planning on sending it off to be repaired and then to ANACS to have it holdered (as holed and repaired). Clear date but very much a coin in circulation, grades VG/F. Guess these things really did circulate back then.

So what does everyone think a 1856 is worth damaged?

(I will try to scan it tomorrow and post an image.)

There's a guy in the back pages of the classifieds of Numismatic News that repairs holded & damaged coins. I've heard a couple of Dealers/Collectors who swear by him (even got one of his 1799 drilled Bust dollars into a Service's holder).
I'd have him repair it first and then sell it as a repaired coin, of course.

I'd guess around 2K or better. One of the few coins that would be acceptable to collectors in a damaged condition...even at that price.

Have never seen one holed - looking forward to the pic.

Isn't holed now, more like plugged. I will try to scan it when I am in the shop tomorrow.

Assuming you are not in the market yourself for the coin, would appreciate your finding out what the dealer wants for it and let us know along with the scan or feel free to PM me as I might be interested. Thanks.
