Would ANACS grade this??? Got the grade WOW!!

I have e-mailed ANACS and they said they do net grade chopmarked trade dollars but do you think they would net it with the test mark (left side) or would it come back BB'd?

They would offer an opinion as to whether the coin is authentic... I realize that the picture is significantly larger than the coin, but that mark on the left makes it a tough call...I don't know what they would do.

yeah net grade. I have a half dime graded "bent, cleaned, damaged, holed" took a lot to fit that on the slab too! image

  • I'm confused now, when i e-mailed ANACS to see if they graded chopmarked trade dollars they said yes but when i'm looking at the FAQ's i saw this

Are there any types of coins that ANACS does not grade and encapsulate?

    A. ANACS does not grade and encapsulate the Panama-Pacific $50 commemorative due to insert aperture limitations. Any coin larger than 40.6 mm or thicker than 3.8 mm cannot be encapsulated. ANACS does not grade cob coins, counterstamped issues, certain emergency issues, some Mexican Revolutionary issues, colonials (with the exception of the Fugio Cent), California fractionals, ancients, blank planchets, paper money. ANACS also does not grade or encapsulate non-genuine pieces or coins with active PVC.

isn't a chopmarked trade dollar a counterstamped issue? imageimageimageimage

no, I beleive counterstamping is making another coin from a coin (yeah like that makes any sense, sorry, tired) I am sure someone will have a better explanation.

    "counterstamped" does not = "test-marked"

your coin will end up "au details, damaged, net xf-40", or thereabouts.

ANACS grades Spanish colonial cobs too... they said they'd fix the FAQ when I emailed about it. Terrible support (not as bad as SEGS though), but I guess you get what you pay for.

ANACS would net grade this one, easily. That "hole", by the way, really isn't- it's a test plug/dig that is akin to a Chop.

Neat coin with lots of history.
I know too, what with all the counterfeits flooding the market, there is concern whether this one is real. It appears to be, to me.
Good luck with it and let us know what ANACS does with it, if that is indeed the route you decide to take.

This is the only coin i have that i want certified so 1 of 2 things will happen

    1. It stays raw and it gets Net-VG written on the holder or
    2. It takes a ride with someone elses submission (dosn't pay to only send in one coin)

If you do end up sending to ANACS, it will end up in a slab unless ->

Die-Struck Copy - lots of fakes out there, if they think so, it will come back in flip
PVC damage - if it smells of PVC, they send it back

What makes you think that big hole is a test mark? Looks like someone tried drilling and gave up, and what is going on around the date - has this been tooled there as well?

i was told by a trade dollar collector from the forums i know it was shiro or TDN i can't remember

Don't know why this would matter but their is a CC mintmark on the Rev.
  • I have coins like 1n 1853 1/2 AU holed that I though of sending to ANACS

I just wanted to say that the scan in the original post does NOT do this coin justice. It really is a nice coin. I would have thought AU details personally, but then, I do not know Trade dollars that well. The coin would fit nicely into any collection as a historical piece.

Wow! I would have guessed AU details and netted down around F or so if they would even grade it. Cool.
