I'm probably going to get killed on this coin!

I couldn't resist, but I probably overpaid. Another toned Peace $, this time a 27-S with W. Raymond toning on the rims. Real pretty, and hard to find on Peace $. I like it because I don't have a WR toning example for my set.

1927-S Raw Toned Peace $

If it comes back any MS grade, I'll be happy. A 62+ and I'm overjoyed! I'm just worried about the AU58 grade.

What are your opinions as to grade? Remember 27-S are weak strikes and have moderate baginess.

As always, your expert and not so expert opinions are welcome and very much appreciated!

  • Mike - My gut reaction tells me the coin is pretty - but it may have been polished lightly at some point - just a gut feel.

From what I've read, 27-S have a tendency to come in a PL finish. I thought about that and thought the same, but according to Highfil's book, it's somewhat common for them to be a little shiny. But then again, I could be wrong.

Very little experience grading Peace dollars will probably have me a bit off on this one, but my grade would be MS63, although a better look could lower it to 62. I also have a bit of hesitance over the lustre on the cheek - Like Frank said, a possible wipe at one time...

It should still smile well for the camera (hint, hint) image

I think your gut is correct. You overpaid a bit, but the toning seems nice. You seem to be right on with the grade too. au/58-ms61. I wish he would have slabbed those coins. I just won't bid on them raw, online like that. I've taken a pledge to not bid on anything raw on Ebay. I return almost every piece I purchase like that. It's a pain in the...............again, not worth it for me.

I can imagine what the various grades would be from everyone on this piece.
MS? uhhhhh.Low MS if it is I think.
    Atleast an AU 53 IMO.
But can we really pin-point the grade from just a scan? No.
  • Nice toning but a wipe for sure. It may be BBed.

The reverse is a very weak strike in the "Plur" and the sun rays have taken some strong hits.

    The "GOD" looks oddly flat.

    Maybe a AU50

Frattlaw, I don't do Ebay much and for sure not raw. But I bought probably one of the nicer Morgan's this seller had earlier. It came exactly as imaged, the only thing I can say is the marks on the coin were more in person than the photo.

I like the seller and he answers questions fast and honest. Before I bid he said he felt the coin I bought was 63. When I got it I said 62.

Pcgs also said 62. I was happy with the deal. The only reason I had it slabbed was it is a better date Morgan 1886s I think it was.

Edit to add: if you are not asking him questions you might want to consider it. My experience he was honest with his answers. Even one of these Peace$ that you bought before, I asked him about the ding on rev and he said indeed it was there after looking at the coin.

It looks MS-62 to me, doesn't look like it has any rub or a light cleaning...under a glass it may be different.

    Stman image I took you advice and emailed him as to his opinion of the grade. Tom's a Board member and I would trust his judgement as well as his grading based upon your experience. Here's his response;

I think you bought it right. It's not an AU...I can't see any rub. But it's
    not a 63 either: a few too many little nicks. Probably a 61, maybe a 62.

Maybe I'll get that 1pt bump for the color. Well I feel better now. As for the 24, I probably won't even get it slabbed, that might be a album coin. Dunno yet. But thanks for the advice.

Looks like you at least took the nicest toned of the lot. And i agree with miss Lucille, if you like the coin you didn't pay too much.

ps. i'll play guess the grade and say, i'm sorry, 60. just looks a little too baggy to go higher. but good luck.

pps. you can't get killed if you don't try to sell it off......

It's got some big heavy marks especially on Liberty's nose and the sun rays so I say 61/62 at best. It might have come from a wr album but it looks more like a WHITE coin with a small bit of light peripheral tone.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • I was going to bid on this coin for my 20th century type set. Once it got past $100, I took the advice of forum members far more experienced than I. I will almost always pass on an unslabbed coin over $100 I can see up close and personal. Please let us know what you get relevant to the grade.

Frattlaw, I looked at the coin a litttle better, since I really don't see many coins graded ms61 anymore ( do you notice that too) They seem to go 62 when they are pretty baggy. So here is kind of a dumb guess. I would say it would grade either ms60 or ms62.

I'm going to go against the crowd. I think when you get the coin you're going to be thrilled with it. A 1927-S Peace Dollar that looks like that coin for that price seems like a good deal to me.
