As for telling whether a coin has been dipped, many times the coin, if it has been overdipped will looked washed out and dull. Sometimes too, if you dip a coin that you shouldn't have dipped, because the toning is too deeply etched in the coin, you can ruin a coin, and it'll come out with an almost pourous texture to it. If a coin has been dipped maybe once and properly, you can hardly tell at all.
