Need some opinions on some toned Morgans

Hey All:

As I'm pondering my collection, I'm looking to maybe sell a few of my toned Morgans to support my habit for.... MORE TONED MORGANS!!! image

What do you guys think of these? The obverse of each is immediately on top of it's corresponding reverse. The grades are as follows:

1881S - NGCMS64
1882S - NGCMS65
1885P - NGCMS64
1887P - NGCMS64

I'm wondering what you guys think of them - like them - don't like them? THANKS!

Frank

I like the ones from Philly but don't care too much for the San Fran ones, just a matter pf personal taste.

The two philly ones are nice. The 81s is OK but I bet the luster booms off it.

to be honest i don't like any of them, but different people like different things i'm sure there are people here that love the looks of these coins.

MB - it's funny you should say that. I've taken some of my best toners to different dealers and they've pretty much concurred with you - some of them will love the toned look, and some of them will suggest dipping them. I guess to each his own. I like toners that have booming brilliance under the tone - the two top ones, though they have relatively ehhh toning, have PL obverses and great luster underneath, that when you twist them under the light they really come to life. This is a dilema for me now because I'm kinda starting to like them again - ugh!!! image

I prefer the P mint examples also. The 85P best. Even color, extending to frame the reverse rim. However, you've picked them out for some reason.
If your like me, your tastes have refined over the years, and you've seen a lot of toned coins. You know what turns you on. Keep that vision.

If it makes you feel any better i like the Rev. of the one on the bottom left, just a little rim tone to add a little bit of personality to the coin.

    did you see my toner?
  • 1881-s - The Obverse is ok. Just doesn`t hit me. The Reverse I really like and is my favorite of the four.

1882-s - I like both the Obverse and Reverse. Rasberry and blast white. Nice!

1885/1887 - The 1887 I like the pattern of the Toning. How it goes from left to right it`s like a light through a prism.

All in all nice pieces. The colors aren`t sloppy.
  • I like the rev of both S mints and the obv of both P mints

  • I like the ones on the left. They've got character without fingerprints.
