No School in Florida Tomorrow

Can you believe that there will be no school for a few counties in Central Florida due to the WIND CHILL factor getting down to 10 degrees? They didn't want the kids to be cold while waiting at the bus stop. Awwww. image

Geez, I am a northern transplant and where I grew up (Rhode Island) it would take almost a foot of snow before the schools closed. Not down here lol. Just a little wind chill and these school boards panic! I remember some mornings up north when my ears felt like they'd freeze off while waiting for the bus.

  • LOL 10f thats like almost tropical. When I wasa kid we would have to wait out side for the buss and it would be 25 or 30 below with the wind chill. I never died. I never got forst bitten. I have to kinda laugh at those southern people. Try the northern life. LoL now that i think of it im in Indiana and im not really northern

ROTFLAMAO That is to funny, here in WI the windchill hit -20 average was closer to -12 but with the wind gusts it dropped to -20. We still had to go to schoolimage I even ride my bicycle home from school, it's a 4 mile ride and it's a blast after sitting in school all day what better to do than relax with a short rideimage

Hey it is cold here in LA. We were making fun of a bunch of snowbirds wearing shorts and one of my men said look at you your'e wearing shorts AND long johns. I said yeah I'm no idiot.
One of my crews went home early today. They said the wind blowing sand off the top of the sanddunes hurt and they couldn't hold the plywood.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

That's pretty funny, almost as funny as when they close down schools here when we get four inches of snow. Seriously, it has been bitterly cold here (for us) for the last week. Yesterday our high was 22, right now it is 9 with the wind blowing 20mph. I'm 25 miles west of Richmond VA.

I'm a New Englander as well. When I was in the USAF stationed at Langley AFB in VA it snowed about a quarter of an inch and it paralyzed the entire peninsula! Go figgerimage

  • Hey.....We don't have winter clothes down here! No hats, gloves, boots or heavy jackets! They have to keep the kids at home! I'm in SW FL and it's 31 degrees, we don't have furnaces! All we have is just some stupid heat tape inside the airconditioner vents. Needless to say I have on 3 pairs of socks, two bathrobes over two pair of jammies! I'm thinking about putting a pair of underwear on my head! Want pictures? LOLOL
I forgot to tell you, I slept with as many Golden Retreivers piled on top of me as I could get!

  • I'm in NE FL and our temp is around 19 or 21 degrees (before wind chill). I do have a winter jacket, being a SW PA transplant. I don't think they closed the schools so the kids don't get cold waiting for the bus. It is my understanding that some of the portable classrooms, and even some of the school buildings, don't have sufficient heat to keep the kids warm all day. If that is really the case, I agree with closing the schools. If the kids were forced to sit in freezing cold classrooms all day, many would get sick and learning would suffer. It is also my inderstanding that here in NE FL, temps will not go up to freezing until around 10 AM or so. image

Well, that's my 2 cents worth. image Time to go to work.

Oh, yeah. We slept with 2 Labrador Retrievers on the bed with us last night. (but that's a normal occurence in our house image )

  • I'm from North west Wyoming but now live in Virgina due to my current job. I get a kick out of the winters here. Growing up they never closed a school for snow and we talk about our snow in feet not inch's. I have seen it snow in june and once it snowed on the 4th of julyimage no kidding. I guess we all grow up with a differnt standard for what is too much snow or cold to go to school. My wife got a day off yesterday because off the snow and when I drove home I had to laugh at why she was home 1 inch of snow gezzz. Stay warm down there in Florida and hope it warms up by Feb 14. It 's time to go and fire up the the barbeque just to get the people next door talking about that crazy person next doorimage

Well, here in East TN the roads are ice, the temp is 5 and the wind chill is -6. image
  • In Chattanooga it is 2 degrees on my back porch. Last night they called off schools for today for several reasons. The diesel school busses won't start, for one. But the main reason is when it is this cold many kids stay home anyway. When that happens, the daily average attendance drops and Federal funding is reduced accordingly. Its better financially to take the whole day off and go an extra day in the spring than to loose funding. Besides ITS TOO COLD TO GO ANYWHERE!!

Wind chill! BAH! People don't go outside without clothes when it's cold
so how can you measure wind chill. This is virtually meaningless in the
real world and made up just so people can feel more miserable than they
really are, and cancel school. There are dozens of factors that affect how
an individual reacts to cold and some are more important than wind or
    even temperature.

  • What is really funny are the people in New York and Chicago and other places in July and August who have no AC in a heat wave. We Southerners get a hoot out of that!!!
  • Here in Dallas the temp is 19 degrees (don't know the wind chill). It's not too bad, really. The funny thing is that it was 73 degrees on Monday and it's expected to get up to 75 degrees either Monday or Tuesday of next week!
