Acetoned gold Indian.. BB'd...What can I do now???

About a year ago I bought a 1910-S, $10 Indian. It was slabbed MS63 by PCGS. I got it thinking I would send it in to see if it would go 64. It had quite a bit of grunge on it so I hit it with Acetone and instantly turned it into a very shiny thing of beauty. Looking at it after it's bath I wasn't sure it would go 64 or not but I figured it would at least come back a 63. It was sent in to PCGS. Back it came BB'd. "Altered surfaces" or something like that. A few days ago I read a thread here about how bathing gold coins in acetone is not a very good idea. Who'd a thought? The coin has not been "cleaned". There are no abrasive markings on it at all, just the minimal amount of marks one would expect to find on a 63/64 coin. Did the acetone really do something to change the surface? Can anything be done now?
I've done well buying and selling coins over the past two years so losing a big chunk on this one doesn't really hurt all that badly when I "dollar cost average". I don't want to "pull a fast one" by sending it in to some lowball grading co. that might be more forgiving and at least grade it back up to the 63 allowing me to run it out to some unsuspecting buyer on Ebay who would buy it thinking they would get it upgraded to a 64 and make a big killing only to have it returned to them in a body bag. If I did that I would want to take a bath in acetone myself and no doubt some of the members of this board would like to be there with a match as the grunge was dripping off me.
So, what to do? Frame it and hang it up on my wall as a lesson learned? The problem I have is that it's a really beautiful coin and needs to to be in a nice holder. Your thoughts and opinions are requested and welcomed.
Thanks much!!!

The bright color probably needs to mellow just a little bit. Give it six months, tucked away and then try NGC.
It'll look good in their holder anyway.

sorry to here about your bad luck, but, thousands of coins have been ruined because of inproper cleaning, your better to leave it alone and take the coin for what its worth, rather than messing it up.image

Too bad you don't know the doctor that put the grundge on it to hide the problems in the first place and get it into a 63 holder again.
Once you crack it and make it raw anything can happen.

I doubt very much that the acetone would have done anything to the coin had it been truly original. It likely removed something that was hiding something else.

Too bad. I guess a 63 in the holder is worth two 64's in the bush.

I'll take it off your hands if you don't want it anymore.
  • It may also be just another case of a coin that got body bagged for no real reason and if you were to send it in again it may very well come back holdered.

I truly doubt that the acetone had any effect on the coin itself, and as Dog implies, the grunge was probably hiding the real cause.

lesson learned, i hope. LEAVE THE COINS ALONE!!! image

you MIGHT try a very simple solution (pun intended) of dishwashing detergent & warm water. do NOT attempt on anything but gold. user an extremely soft natural-sponge. it is possible the acetone reacted w/ the grunge, leaving a residue behind.

good luck, but again, learn the lesson & leave well-enough alone.

Maybe NCS would be worth a try if you want it in a slab? otherwise I would buy a nice capitol holder to store it and enjoy it as it is. mike image
