Any photographic tips?

I would like to get some decent pictures of my coins. I'm using a Sony 4 megapixel camera. Give me some tips on lighting, angles, etc. Also I would like to add pictures to my registry sets. How do I do this and can I use any size picture file? I think I have some beautiful coins and would like to share them. Thanks.
Merc collector.

Maybe I do things the cheap way, but I use a couple of halogen desk lamps with the flexable neck that you can purchase from office max or kmart, & buy both the 5 watt & 10 watt replacement bulbs to play around with. Depending on the coin, or slab I have the ability to adjust the angle of light to any direction.

I havn't really bothered with taking pictures at different angles, but I do use different colored backrounds for different coins. Make sure your camera has a good macro ability, & experiment with different exposure, & light settings until you capture images that accuratly reflect your coins.

The best tip of all would be "alot" of practice.

I still have much to learn myself, but I've found that backround makes the most difference so far. & nice morgan dollars come out good no matter what... lol..

My tip would be to read the volumninous prior threads, try it out and come back with specific questions.

  • Russ and FC57Coins are a couple of people that have talked alot about this topic in the last couple of months. You may want to go back and read what they wrote and talked about. As cascade said too, alot of practice as well.

Diffused light is one of the best tricks. Using simply a light bulb, regardless of the type, will not work well with coins. Use something between your lamp and your coin to diffuse - flood - the light.

I use a plain piece of computer paper, it eliminates the glare while still giving you pure clean white light that allow you to get full depth of field as you can see from the picture below. 1400 year old coin about the size of a US $3 gold piece (just under 21mm).

Try the pictures outside, nothing like real light to show off real colors.

  • The secret to great photography is take a lot of pictures. I take about 40 or so shots of a coin varying lighting and the angle, etc., before I get a shot that I like. The beauty of digital photography for coin photos is that any shots I don't like don't cost me a dime.

  • I was checking coins out on eBay and ran into a seller by the name of:Fairtraderz. That had some high detailed pictures. I called them up and Gary said that they use a Nikon 4500.
