Fire bright toned ASE (photos)

I thought you folks might like to see the most recent coin submitted for photos. Looks like it's painted, but it's not...really.

  • I personally find it hard to believe that a coin thats 2 years old has toned like that. Heck ive been trying my own experiment for a year now on AT on some MS60 1964 Kennedy's and not a thing has happened to them. The only thing that has happened is they look as MS60 as they were when I started. This said i still like the color.

  • THAT KIND OF TONING IN 2-3 YEARS, Please tell me how it was stored so mine have a shot at looking like that!

I have no idea how it was stored, it's not mine. It was submitted to me for photography and archive service. I photographed the coin and have sent it home. As for whether I believe the toning is natural - I don't know, but NGC seems to think so.

I have one like that (not my slabbed one)- 1992 I believe it is.. the scans suck, so no pics until I get a digi cam image It is fingerprinted a lot, but honestly, the fingerprints give it some texture and life... they really don't detract image

    Oh, and how they tone:

Most silver coins are 90% silver (the circulating stuff)- that means that 10% won't react with the air and stuff in the air... on the other hand-
Silver eagles are 99.9% silver. Since there is basically nothing in the coin that won't react with the air, especially sulfur, the coins will tone VERY quickly- some 2002s are already showing toning.

PS- NGC bagged my other one image PCGS liked it, but I didn't like the grade imageimage

I've had a few SAE's sit out & tone pretty quick, but they are always goldish-brown color, & maybe a faint trace of blue, but nothing like that.

Why would NGC certify that coin Cameo ? If it wasn't for the P-mint mark I would swear it was Unc.

It's the method of photography to show the colors that makes it look that way. It is a cameo proof, although the colors hide much of it. From an angle the coin is dark with very smooth mirror fields.

Apparently NGC no longer makes a distinction between AT and natural toning!image

The way the toning blends with the coin I think it is real. NGC isn't afraid to bodybag a coin like this if they have any question. They know what it'll look like if they allow one of these to get out with blatant AT.

100% silver will tone in a matter of months and this one has done so very attractively.
In my opinion, it's easily worth $500.00 just for the color. At least that would be my standing offer to the owner (PM already sent).

I doubt I'll own it though as he will either like it enough to keep it or it'll go to an even higher offer.
