Getting rid of carbon spots on copper

Does anyone know how to get those pesky little carbon spots off copper cents? I just bought a 1964 Lincoln that's in an old PCGS 68RD holder that's an easy DCAM(for $8) and would make 69DCAM except for a few TINY carbon spots. Anyone with the knowledge please let me know. Thanks in advance! Ray

  • Ain't gonna happen! Sorry, but the spots you are seeing are almost always not surface spots but impurities that have been working their way to the surface over the years. I know of no way to remove them, since any surface treatment will simply expose another, deeper, "layer" underneath.

I forgot to mention, the black spots are only seen under 10X magnification. How does this affect the grade? I know if they ae seen with the eye it drops it down, but, how about these? Thanks! Ray

Ray, knowing what you now know about that 1964 Lincoln, would you still buy it?

I bought the coin not the holder because it's a VERY nice coi. At $8, YES I would but the coin again and will continue looking for them. I might send it back in to get the DCAM designation. Right now it's in an old holder. Ray
