Just finished my 18th century type set!

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Just received the final coin (wanna guess which one?) in my 18th century type set. Half cents and Large cents I have a few different dates, so just picked one to include:
1797 half cent (raw)
1794 large cent (SEGS F-15)
1797 half dime (ANACS VF-30)
1798 over 7 dime (PCGS VG-8)
1796 quarter (NGC VF-25)
1795 half dollar (raw)
1799 dollar (PCGS VF-20)
1798 half eagle (ANACS VF-20)

How's that for equal opportunity grading? I believe the Large Cent is my only SEGS coin...

Good work!!! Putting together a set like that requires some funds, but, more importantly, requires patience, knowledge and commitment. Way to go.image

  • Super nice, especially that 1799 $ !

How long did it take you? So real nice eye appeal there on a few.

I guesss we can overlook that SEGS slab....for now! image

  • Wow!image That's a great accomplishment. That will be my next quest after finishing my 19th century set (several years down the road). I especially like your Half Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar. How long did it take to complete?

    Thanks all!
From first coin (probably the Large Cent, but not positive) to last (the quarter, from the Superior auction at FUN), about 4 years. I've bid on several 1796 quarters over the last year or two, in the big auctions, but kept getting outbid. FInally snagged one.
For the last couple of years, I've been collecting primarily Seated Dimes, but I needed to break up the long, dry spells with something :.) I probably should replace the the half dollar with a higher grade coin, and maybe the dime, though the dime looks nicer than the pic.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade but where are the Half Eagle and Eagle (or do you consider the Quarter Eagle as the coin that covers that major design type)?

  • Nice set! My favorites are two of the halves, the half cent and the half eagle image

Being an early American History buff, I think your collection is great. They all look to be solid and that in itself is an accomplishment. By the way, I did a quick census count on NGC graded Half Cents of the 1700's. The total number graded in all conditions is 250.

I'm sure there are a lot of raw coins out there and numerous slabs from other companies, but even at that, the total survivors is miniscule.

Each of your coins would be considered a jewel in the collection of a lot of hobbyists. It's nice to see some collector grade rarities for a change.

    That's OK. I have an umbrella :.)
I thought someone might bring that up. For now, gold is a "type." However, the 1798 Q. Eagle and 1797 (or 99) Eagle have been on my watch list. No candidates so far. The coin listed IS a half eagle

Well here's a big congrats. That is an admirable accomplishment. I've actually considered
slowly putting an 18th century type set together. I'm gonna finish my fathers set first, then I'll pick your brain.

Very nice set (even minus the half eagle and eagle image)! I'm somewhat of a history buff and realizing that these coins circulated during the early formative years of U.S. history, when Washington & Adams (two of my favorite Revolutionary War personalities) were President, makes these coins of special interest to me.

How long have you been working on the set?

pmh1nic: First coin obtained for it was about 4 years ago, which I'm pretty sure was the Large Cent. At that time, I didn't purchase it with the type set in mind, but I was working on a Large Cent date set, which I completed a couple of years ago. More recently, I've been working on Seated Dimes, which has been kinda slow lately. So to counteract the doldrums of the dry spell, I've been putting together a few mini-sets, including this one. It's been probably about 2 years that I've actively looked for these coins, the most recent being obtained via Superior's FUN auction.
  • Nice set, Barry! The half-cent is impressive (looks like some mint red on the reverse?). I also envy you for owning a 1796 quarter!

Excellent set. I also have a great appreciation for 18th century U.S. coins that have completed their tour of commerce.

If anyone's interested, I just put together a web page (with some invaluable assistance from a collector in Australia) of the type set. Link
