Awesomely/Strangely toned 1961 proof cent!!!

When looking through the proof sets I just got in for my charity sale, I found one with a cent that had toning like I had never before seen... it is a dark, metallic blue (darker than the pictures show- not black dark... it is very blue and very shiny)- separating it from the red of copper is a thin red line that looks like it was drawn by a permanent marker... Since the coin is still in the proof packaging, it has got to be real.

Here is a scan of the obverse- the reverse has a small amount of blue on the edge... it is really cool!

PS- If you like it, it will be for sale for charity soon imageimage

  • I have an identical 1964 penny found in a proof set. I posted it a few months ago and no one knew what it was. Here are my photo's. It is still in the cello.

I am far from the expert here, but the only plausible explanation to me is that the coin is the result of a planchet that was not fully washed/treated prior to striking, that it was only partially dipped, as it were....

I have a proof nickel with the small blue crescent as well - don't think it is related to the copper planchet.

    MB,

I have a busy weekend this week, and will be at a convention next weekend until Sunday afternoon- I will try to catalog the items (still coming in and over 50 now image!!!) so I can list on 2/2 in an auction format image I have scanned, so far, about 40 items... you can look for lots of slabs- moderns, frankies, roosies, washingtons, darkside sets, nice toned stuff, britannias, proof sets image Lots of goodies!

    Jeremy

PS- I mentioned frankies... where's Lucy?

Thanks Jeff, but it is a keeper. Sorry for the bad pic, but it is a nice coin. I love the way these guys tone silver.
