Showed some tone dealers at a show last week and they said endroll, i.e. shotgun roll but I'm having trouble with that because shotgun crimps are closer to the peripheral of the coin but then again I haven't seen everykind of shotgun roll made. Another tone guy, I think it was art or gemtone said in a post a while back some rolls had round paper paper disks at the ends but he didn't have any details.
I know some old commems had round areas in the holder that leave toned circles but I'm not familiar with commem holders.
Another coin being on top should have blocked the toning and made it a white spot unless the coin was already toned first.
The coin is gold colored and the rev is just a little lighter. The circle is the same size as a penny.
You guys know I like the weird ones and this one is weird all right.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • Maybe a 2x2 rested on top of it?

Obviously it was used as a coaster for a shot glass (the person was drinking Cointreau).

Might have had a ring of some type (ring as in jewelry) of unknown type material resting on it. It would explain the hard edge on one side and not so hard edge on the other side.

I think it's a coin from the Mel Gibson movie "Signs"

1 possible simple explanation: a brass ring sat on the coin for a couple of decades.

It could have been a ring or token toning, i.e. someone laid one of those tokens with no center on it. Just a wild guess.
  • Was used as a coffee mug hot plate?
  • Maybe a rubber O-ring ???
  • Hello Dog97 Well, here is my best guess (and a guess it is). It's not a "shot gun" roll but a "whiskey shot glass!" A small piece of old time sulferated paper/tissue was "traced" and cut around an upside down whiskey "shot-glass" (the part where the whiskey would go in). The whiskey shot glass itself was placed over the paper on top of the Morgan at the center of the obverse. Thus, the remaining paper, after the bulk of the paper was cut away, "encircled" the EDGE of the whiskey shot glass.

The rest of paper was discarded. So, you have a whiskey shot glass circumference surrounded by the sulferated paper sitting on top of the Morgan. Over time, the "gasses" from the sulferated paper (which surrounds the edge of the shot glass) were "trapped" INSIDE the whisky shot glass (like a vacuum) thus creating the "etched round" toning effect over the Morgan. The blue toning is where the sulferated paper/tissue came in direct contact with the coin (surrounding the edges of the shot glass and thus transfering it's more jagged shape). The other magenta/russet color "inside" the blue circle was created when the gasses were trapped inside the shot glass. The flow of the color within the circle is further evidence that this might be so (this flow can be seen on Liberty's cheek).

You might want to see if a "whiskey shot glass" would "fit" over the toning. If so, I could be right. If NOT, well - this is just a guess anyway. GREAT looking coin in any event. image

Dog, isn't this the image you emailed me? I think it is. My best guess is it's a weird endroll. From the kind of roll that a machine makes. With the crimped circle. Rather than the typical paper folds. But I agree one would think the crimps would be closer to the periph.

Come to think of it Dog, this is the one you emailed me, why do I say this? because the other day on my pc where I store my pics, I saw this weird looking thing that looked like a toilet seat cover over Miss Liberty's face and I said...... What the heck is this thing and quickly deleted it.image

  • Possible an old 2X2 that was torn in that circle. That particular burn happens in that way. A torn 2X2 will cause that burn. The paper 2X2 with the
cello and staples. I do not think PCGS will grade that coin. I can't think of another way this would have happened.

You really think it's toilet seat toning?
I was kinda leaning towards <<<it almost appears to have been rested on something not only circular but also corrossive<<<<
    A corrosive toilet seat maybe?

I got it! Someone pulled the cigarette lighter from their car and burned the obverse of this coin.
