Need help with an 1863-s half dime

Picked up an 1863-s half dime this past weekend, and the mintmark is repunched to the east. No mention of this in the Blythe half dime book, or Breen's. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks.

    Must be a new variety?
    Can you post a pic?

Although a new variety would be nice, I don't want to speculate on that. image I couldn't get a close up pic of the overdate, unfortunately. It is obvious with the naked eye though. I'll wait a day or so, someone here will probably have some more information.

I've not seen a 63-S with a repunched mint mark. About the only thing I can add is that Larry Briggs will often have unlisted varieties of Gobrecht designs. If nobody here can offer up any thoughts, you might give the Liberty Seated Collectors Club a hollar. If anybody can offer up any thoughts, it would be they.

  • BigD5,
I'm sending you a PM with the name, address, and phone number of a half dime specialist.
This guy is head and shoulders above Al Blythe on the Half Dimes, and may be writing a book on them to replace Al's very weak effort.

  • Hi BigD5. Your coin sounds really neat. I would love to see an image if you could post one. Are you sure that it is a "repunch?" Is the "second" (eastward) punching clearly NON flush with the first punching? Does the secondary mint mark show plain "seperation" from the serif itself (so-called "tilted")?

You know, Seated material has a way of turning up many interesting things. I own an 1870 half dime with an unusual "US of A." It is slabbed in a SEGS holder as a "discovery" coin! Though not an "rpm," it does illustrate how Seated coinage can sometimes offer happy surprises. If you could provide a close up image it would be great. Have you considered running it by Anacs? If it is something, they are usually not adverse to listing it on the slab. Good luck! By the way, what is the grade? image

The coin is in the mail, on it's way to NGC as we speak. They won't notate anything on the holder, I already checked. I'm hoping the coin comes back au/58. You never know though. It does have a larger hit on Liberty, and on the reverse also. With that said, au/58 is probably out of the question. It does have some attractive original toning also.
Ray, thank you for Stephen's contact information. I actually met him at a local show last year, and still have his business card. Can't believe I didn't think of contacting him before I shipped the coin out! I'll check back with him once I receive the coin back.
Matteproof, I'm no variety expert, by any means, but I grabbed a second opinion on the coin from an error dealer, and he thought it was very interesting and recommended I check the reference books on it. I couldn't turn anything up with what I have, so I'll get the coin back, and use Ray's contact to see if this turns out to be anything. Unfortunately, it will take a month or so now. image
Thank you all for the help !!!!
