Obverse is nice, but the reverse is fabulous. I love the red, and that is a great pic. It's so hard to capture the subtle colors correctly.

  • A three degree coin - a term i coined to describe coins that look good three out of the 180 degress you can hold them.

Early toned proof coins often have this characteristic.

I'm faced with this conflict pretty often. I have spent hundreds of hours (that's no exageration) learning how to produce images and i've
shared a great deal of what i know, much of it here in this forum. Here's the conflict -- I don't want to sound like a jerk but i also don't
want to give away a competitive advantage. (Not all my images are great.... we don't swat flies with sheets of plywood....but when i
want them to be good, they're pretty good.)

Suffice it to say, if you have a camera, a scanner and the desire to learn, you can do better than me. I'm still learning every day.

So, do i sound like a jerk? Really? Man, i thought i was doing a pretty good job of sounding fairly reasonable.

Ok, here's a hint. Scans rarely show luster but they can show color the best.

Flourescent light do a better job than scans on luster but not as well on color. You can usually use them at night - try out the kitchen lights under your cabinets.

Incandescent lights show luster the best, as far as i've determined, but don't usually show color very complimentarily.

Natural light can be the best, right before sundown and right after sunup.

Oh....always use a copy stand or tripod.

    There.....less of a jerk?

One of my favorite images -- (if you're a regular, you've seen this already)...

Oh Adrian - you're such a worrywart image

You forget the number 1 rule of engagement - if you don't have a pretty coin to take a picture of, you cant take a pretty picture! What difference does it make what kind of technique you use if you have a crummy coin - good coins will always hold their own in the competitive arena - but you already knew that right? - Anyway - you did confirm one theory I had about the different kinds of lighting - so that's good image

  • Adrian,

That half is awesome. Sorry, but I have to ask, is it for sale?
  • It should be in my eBay store. It currently is listed under "quarters" however, when eBay updates the pages (happens about every six hours), it will properly be in the new coin or halves section.

That 1866 half dollar is truly a stunning piece! Look at how each radial of each star is fully struck up, look at the lines in the shield on the obv., look at the eagles legs and talons on the reverse, the definition, strike, coloring, and surfaces on that piece are superb IMO.
