1940 Cameo Nickel

Anyone know the pops for a 1940 CAM nickel. Would love to get the range of grades as well.

What is one worth?????

Thanks!

  • I see PCGS has two listed, a PR 64 and a PR 65. I'd love to have one but one of these other registry set folks is likely to outbid me image so I guess the price would be somewhat negotiable.

I've attached an image of my '40. PCGS didn't give it a cameo designation when I gave them the chance. It has light cameo contrast and I paid a premium for it a few years ago.

    Carl:

The reverse seems CAM. Hard to tell on the obverse.

Thought the obverse was better than the reverse!

    Just me though!

    Overall a great looking coin!

Here's a 1940 that I've had for many years, in an old PCGS holder. I think the obverse will make CAM, but the reverse is borderline. One of these days I'll send it in for a regrade. It may go PR66 today; a CAM would be a nice bonus. image

  • Nice coin Jim. With that and mine I'd have to guess a few more 1940 cameo Jeffersons will show up over the next year to join with James'.

I will get mine from the safe deposit box today and take a new photo. That prior image was from a scanner. I might take up the advice from the other '40 cameo nickel thread and send mine to NCS before resubmitting to PCGS. First let's get a new look...

I have the one in PR64CAM. It is a nice coin, the contrast is there, but it is marred by a little spotting. I may take a chance on NCS one day (I really wish PCGS had its own, publicly available service).

Carl: I really like the look of those surfaces. What a handsome coin!
Cocoinut: I think that one has a real shot at cameo (the standards are a little looser for pre-'50 Jeffersons). Regardless, I like the look of the obverse very much

The asking price for the PR65CAM (which I really should have picked up when I had the chance) was around $2500 when it was offered last year, shortly after it was made.

I paid medium-high three figures for mine.

  • Thanks for the price info BNE!!

You might be right Greg. I rescued mine from the safe deposit box and took photos. I don't think there is much NCS could do for this one. My earlier scans showed haze but these photos are more accurate. The fields are clean and deep. This coin might not be frosted enough for cameo, unless PCGS does draw the line differently for pre-1950 proof Jeffs.

OK you guys, you've made me post my 1940 PF but it's really nothing to shout about. I wouldn't exactly
say the devices are frosted but rather a very faint frost. The reverse had some strong light while the obverse had less light with a 240 shudder speed.
