what specific coin will be the darling of 2003?

if you had to take an educated guess what would you say will be the winner by the end of the year for price appreciation in coins?

say a slabbed ngc/pcgs ms 64/65 generic saint?
a proof 67 red brown indian cent ngc /pcgs?

the modern commems in pcgs/ngc 70 dcam??

19 century proof type coins 64 and higher pcgs/ngc?

toned morgans dmpl pl morgans 63 and higher? ngc pcgs?

earlycommems 64 and better ngc pcgs?

any slabbed cpins that seem to offer value and demand for the money?

circ type cpins? key dates? proof 70 dcam liccoln cents pcgs??
i am sure the list goes on and on

what do you think are currently undervalued buys in todays market thsat should show some nice demand and p[rice growth by the end of the year?

sincerely michael

untill the economy gets better and Iraq is dealt with genaric gold in 64-66 will do great, but if iraq gets resolved quickly gold will fall again if the economy improves, also dcam anything will continue to be hot.

We have a contest going on for this. So far my generic MS65 Saint's are doing pretty good. Here's the contest link.

I would say Cameo designated earlier proofs. As more earlier proofs are sent in that weren't designated as such, and now do get designated as such, some renewed interest will surface. Just a wild guess though.

I agree with BigD5, cameos. I think IHC cameo's have some room yet to move upward. I also think colorful proof IHC's will climb.

It's got to be a short series and one that is somewhat easy to complete.

Perhaps a series that will get a new useless designation, like Roosevelts with Full Torch Band or Walkers with Full Skirt Lines.

Until I hear of some new useless designation on a series, I think I'll go with 1936-1942 cameos as being the hot thing this year.

Early proofs, especially with cameo. Look at what people are paying for modern proofs. People are starting to realize these are underpriced when you consider their beauty and low mintages...makes me wish I could afford some!

  • I have to believe that collector interest in quarters will
eventually propagate to, of all coins, the Barber series.
For now I think 2003 will still be a good year for proof
and mint state Franklins. Classics will get a little more
    attention from modern collectors.

    Michael,
I think most Contemporary coins will fall out of favor a bit and the emphasis will be on problem free Classic coinage- grade not withstanding. In other words, a premium will be had for even that VF30 Bust dollar- as long as it has no evidence of problems and has superior eye appeal.

If I'm wrong for 2003, then certainly by 2004 I believe the above will take place.

I have to believe that collector interest in quarters will eventually propagate to, of all coins, the Barber series.

I thought about this also. However, the Barber coins are just too ugly (IMHO) to get wide spread collector interest. They are also too expensive to put together a nice set. Most collectors working on the State quarters that moved on to the other Washington quarters could afford to put together a nice set in mint state for not too much money. They could even put togehter a set of proofs for very little money.

They are use to collecting "good condition" coins. To do the same with the Barber quarters, they would need to spend $50,000 or more. I just don't think the interest will spread to this series. Perhaps the SLQ which is much better looking and cheaper and easier to put together.

For now I think 2003 will still be a good year for proof and mint state Franklins.

The problem with ms Franklins is that they have already had their "time in the sun" a little while back.

I would like to add early Bust coinage to the guessing game. This is predicated on more folks wanting to do type sets more than an increase in those collecting the various Bust series.

lol for me i would not be surprised if gold plated state quarters will be the best winners in 2003..lol

i am serious from waht i have seen on here and the prices paid and the demand and interest!!
i thougfht i had seen it all man way i totally wrong!!!

and if pcgs starts to certify the gold plated state quarters watch out they will be the real winners!

if i had to do it all over i would have started to buy all the top pop and 70 pcgs certified lincolns and ike dollars and sba coins and many others like 4 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    the demand is all there!

also for me the barbers are one of the most undervalued series in coins proofs and especially so uncs
and for me higher grade ms coins and monsdter toned or fully original white undipped coins are really attractive! and for barbers they would be good bets for increases i mean you could juat collect for type set purposes?? or just a date set one of each date mintmarked or not!! also a set of one of each mint !!

that would keep most all in their price range even if just for a nice coin for type!! and of cousre the really eye appealling coins be it monster toned and/or original white and/or cameoed deep cameoed i think are pretty really attractive coins with those attributes!!

now not all barbers are great deals or good lookers

but you have to find the great coins!

for example specific examples coins i have seen!

a 1901 barber qwuarter in gem 65 a real 65 one of the most underappreacited sleeper coins but with monster lustre and monster i mean monster toning!!!

for me this would be a great coin to own with i think a fantastic up and coming future!! yes yes

any monster toned ms 65 slightly better date barber dime!! witrh like red and olive colors and booming lustre underneath ditto the 1901 with a bonus for the 1901 a better date!!

wyhen you needd a 1901 for a set you can never find one i have not seen a gem 1901 for sale in 4 years! now maybe i missed one i do not know

or another coin say a so called common date 1909 barber half in gem 65 a real 65 but with monster cartwheel lustre and a never dipped basically white coin!! there is a really Rare coin!!!!!!!!! you never ever see real 65 white ms barber halves with great eye appeal!

NOW maybe not for a date set but for a type set for someone or a mintmarked type set coin!
or even for someone with a little more$$ just to build a one a year date set!

    sincerely michael

and yes for the quarters for a date set not the 01 s just the 01......lol

and for the dimes i am sure most could build a nice ms even gem date set and i am sure for the date 1900 you would not get a 1900s........lol and for the 1894 you would not get the 94s..........lol

and of course in proofs wioldly toned proof coins they are great coins to own and great values!

i mean look at the deep cameo barber quarters after 1900 virtually non existant and super rare coins they would be grewat just to have one for type! also a very beautiful copin like this or any i have mentioned as the above! looking like this!! i think these coins as per the above are great value coins with a fundimanetial reason to rise in value!!

even some really nice cameo proof coins in the barber halves !!

    even the dimes also

i guess the list could go on and on...........

just make sure you buy a barbewr coin with extra special qualitiesw about it then it is to me really attractive not only value wise but lookswise also

i oike any exceptionally eye appealling barber in any grade proof or business striek is a buy value coin with a fundimentiaL REASON to rise in value!

hey lets go to the KFC all you can eat lunch buffet and talk about it!!!
