  • Are the reds on the coin or is that reflected light? If the reds are there, that is an outstanding coin (ok, it's an outstanding coin even if the reds aren't there)!

That is a very nice piece! Believe it or not, the 79-S is a surprisingly tough coin to find in true MS65DMPL or above, and especially so with strong contrast. Many people incorrectly group this date in with the 1880-S or with the 1881-S (which is another surprisingly tough date in DMPL WITH a strong cameo).

Many 1879-S's are only marginally deep and sometimes come dipped out, or with only so-so contrast, a coin like the one pictured by Lucy is underrated and a keeper IMO.

Lucy...I echo airplanenut's sentiment...leave the Frankies !!! Come to the wonderful world of Morgans image
  • Hello new here. What is the actual grade assigned by ANACS. I believe that is what holder it is in. I would have serious doubts that this coin would grade above 63DMPL in a PCGS holder. Probably a 62DMPL. The picture has been digitally massaged. The frosty devices are covered with scrapes and frost breaks. There are hairlines visible at four oclock on the obverse. I dont think this coin will look anywhere near this good in your hand.

I see two pretty ladies, one in the icon, and one in the msg area. The one in the icon area appears to be ms70, very natural. The other coin doesnt quite compare to the first, but not too shabby. That first one is a tough act to followimage

What aspect of the images do you think are digitally massaged? I checked 'em out, and I can't see any evidence of tweaking... such as painting over, etc. Brightness, contrast, hue... that's a bit harder to determine. These things often have to be tweaked to make it more realistic. Bottom line.. I don't see any deceitful photo-doctoring here. Can you clarify your statement?

IT HAS BEAUTIFUL REDS,GOLDS AND ORANGES THICKLY ON BOTH PERIPHERIES JUST LIKE LUCY'S PICS
CAME OUT. IT IS IN AN ANACS 64 ULTRA DEEP MIRROR HOLDER AND IS INDEED THE MOST ULTRA CAMEO 79-S DOLLAR I HAVE EVER HAD WITHOUT REGARD TO NUMERICAL GRADE WITH FULL PROOF QUALITY FULL ARM'S LENGTH "SHAVE YOUR BEARD IN" MIRRORS. IT DOES SHOW LOTS OF FROST BREAKS HOWEVER THEY ARE SHALLOW AND SHOW BADLY DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING THICKNESS OF THE CAMEO. I THINK IT WOULD STILL GO 64 AT PCGS BUT I DONT CARE,IT'S A KEEPER. YOU JUST DO NOT FIND FULL BONIFIDE ULTRA CAMEO ON EVERY RAISED INKLING 79-S DOLLARS WITH PROOF-NO LUSTER AT ALL MIRRORS. I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THIS BEAUTY WITH YOU ALL. I LUV THIS COIN !!!!!!!!!!

hey clarkofkent,i know coins. i couldnt begin to tell you how to "tweak" or "massage" or "enhance" anything. i'm a computer 101 basic functions only kind of guy and i only know how to hit the scan button on a scanner and save a pic or snap the button on my sony fd75 camera. all these settings are factory "auto" or "neautral". furthermore, i dont want to know how to "pull a stunt" either because it pisses me off when i get something in that has actually been fudged and dont look like it does on line as as it does in your hand live. in fact, if i cant get a raw coin or a slab to look like in a pic or scan the way it does in normal room lights i wont even run the darn thing because i dont want that accusation thrown at me. although a few cheap-shot chicken-chumps have tried to impune our integrity with such nonsense. and you all know who i'm referring to i'm sure. and those of you in the business legitimately that we've known most of you for 20-25 years, ya'll know better.
also folks, i hate to ramble so much about it but whether some of you think it true or not we do stand up honest business and that's the only way i would have it whether any of you or God himself was looking over my shoulder,i'm gonna do straight business. which is why i get so pissed off when others dont and i go off the deep end about it when they try to make it sound that way about us. you can like me or not,but i go to bed every night with knowing i did the right thing on every deal even if i have to put up a fuss over it to prove a point.

  • Hello, Russ thanks for the welcome. Yes the anacs logo is in the picture. As far as digital enhancment goes there are so many computer programs out there to work with photos it is unreal. They all have features which will allow you to saturate, add or change color and there are millions of variations. In this image the coin is obviously a toned DMPL and I think the toning is real. My problem is with the grade only. Both pictures have a background color which is exactly the same. This is saturation. You can boost that and cover such stuff as hairlines(except really big ones like at 4.00 oclock). It will also mask the millions of frost breaks on the cameo surfaces of the coin. In person those would be really ugly. The feilds in the prime focal areas are full of chatter which would make the fields more cloudy and disruptive to light reflection. Hence the grade. I stand by my remark. PCGS will only grade that coin at a 63DMPL max. Most likely a 62DMPL. Im not trying to be unkind, but I think we are more helpful if we are able to talk rationally about things. I do like the color on the coin but alas, that is only 1/4 of the grading process.

So what is the grade? ANACS 64 dmpl, PCGS 63 dmpl or if you go by NGC's new DMPL standards it wouldn't be a dmpl??
It looks like it has nice real contrast.

  • I believe the owner stated ANACS UDM64. As for the color problem, all of the raised surfaces on both the obverse and reverse are the same light yellow or gold color, even the denticles just prior to the reeding except where the tone is very deep. That is highly unusual and doesnt look real. Also the red tone at the top of the obverse is under the yellow and has trouble showing through. Ive never seen a toned Morgan which was toned on part of the surface and then had all of the surfaces overlaid with the same gold patina. Ive seen gold patina on all of a Morgan, just not on a radically toned Morgan. I suppose there is a first time but I would reserve my right to look at this particular coin in person before I said it looked good or bad!

    doops,

That 81-CC looks like a really nice piece, if that pic is accurate and that scratch is on the holder, it's a PQ 64DM if not a full 65, even at PCGS. I've seen worse 81-CC's in PCGS 65DM holders. BTW...if that 79-S in 64UDM is yours, is it for sale??

hey dragon, that must have been a piece of lint when robert took the pics. when the coin got in i knew right off the bat it was vise-grip slap on the floor time for that puppy. it WILL come back a 64dmpl from pcgs and centles's pics are not the best, the CAMEO was super frosty and ssssssstout ! and mirrors very platelike,no bad hits in the focal areas and really deep and rolling. in or out of ANY holder i can grade coins. i buy coins not plastic. i sell coins, not plastic. some just need the major services opinions especially in the higher caliber stuff to make a "comfortable" purchase and ease of future resale. it is precisely and technically very pq, clean cheeked,high-end ms64.7 strong cameo deeply mirrored dollar. PERIOD.
DCHUMWPEO just cant stand it that he cant do what a pro does as routine is why he tries to make issue out of the fact i bought a rip from robert johnson that just so happen to be in an NTC holder. SO WHAT??
as keets would say (with a little adlib) knowledge is power,DCHUMPS ignorance is a blitch! heh...that was a good one....he'll pay for his blunders,DEARLY...
