IKES...Whats the buzz on blue pack 40% Ikes?

I have a handful of Blue pack Ikes, all years issued. Any collectors of this coin?
Let me know what's going on with them.
They are very clean, and I'm wondering if I should slab to sell.
So need some more insight into the collectors.

The blue pack Ikes are for the most part clean coins. There weren't circulated and those look much and are much better them some of the slabbed clads of the same date. With that in mind, the premiums for these coins are for the ultra grades. I think MS67/68s bring a nice profit, otherwise it isn't worth slabbing them.

If you have a decent lot to choose from, I would look through it, find the best and certify that one. See what you get. If it comes back high, then you might want to try some of the others depending on how it compares to that particular slabbed example. If not stick them on EBay in the blue packs and they'll still probably sell anyway.

Hopefully others can add some additonal insight -- Supercoin is a good source, he specializes in Ikes and the such.

Blue pack Ikes generally have some marking on them. They are much
cleaner than the clads. They all have premiums in MS 65 and MS-66
or better are worth slabbing. Some of these come in very lustrous PL.

  • I dont really know much about them but I know they can bring in some $$$.

  • Worthwhile grades to consider slabbing are 1971-S in MS66+, all the others in MS67+. You might (just) break even at one lower grade.

The 1971-S in particular is often nasty looking, so if you have exceptional examples of that it may be worth a shot.

Super coin is correct. None of these are slabbing in MS65 or 66 except the 71-S in 66 or better.

PL for a blue ike? Never seen that. I've always hated that finish the mint used on those coins.

I've seen only a couple, but have seen scans of a couple others. All, so far, have been '71 or '72.

    CK,

I have one that is from a worn or polished die that is PL around the devices and frosty in the field. I looked at it a long time trying to decide what to make of it. The mirror around the devices is about 1/8th inch wide and fades to frost. I'll put up a pic when I relocate it in the coin box.image It is a pretty good strike 71-S.

  • I think the 1972 Silvers aren't worth sending in unless you have a shot at MS68. If it comes back in MS67, you're pretty much break even if take into account the slabbing fees then the Ebay selling fees +/- Paypal fees.

1971 in general are pretty banged up. However, there are some interesting die varieties in this year.

What about the brown Ikes, from what I have been seeing on Ebay, looks like there is little incentive to slab them either.

NGC or PCGS....I havent used ANACS, from what I've seen they are too loose for my taste.

  • While the blue Ikes are less plentiful than the clads, they are readily available in ms65, and 66. The same designations in clad are worth more money. From my experience with the blue Ikes they are not usually slick looking coins. Most have nicks and dings that will detract from grading. Raw they don't bring much on ebay.

Might be worth it if you could actually find a clean one. I've read that a lot of those got hazy over time...I have a 71 proof on my desk at work just for grins...and it has some real haze in the fields...
  • That haze can be readily removed (from the silver-clad "brown pack" Ikes) with a quick dip in dilute Jeweluster, and without any long-term ill effects if done correctly.

I wouldn't bother certifying one unless it had exceptional cameo and was virtually flawless.
