It's always interested me how you can take the same coin/ same series and enjoy the different stories the coins would tell- from each end of the grading scale. The MS67 lived a charmed life while the FA02 was the "working" coin in the group.

How could any coin collector tell another coin collector that "his" coin was a waste of time and money. Personally, I think that coin collecting should be for everyone, and collect whatever you choose, within budget of course.

Yes- I've been interested in both sides for about 15 years now. I found the FA02 at Long Beach via a Dealer who specializes in early Commemoratives. He was also putting together a raw set of the lowest grade (Problem free) Commemoratives and probably had his Commemorative coin album about 40% filled. He had been casually looking for these for about ten years or so. Finding early Commemoratives in super low grade (Problem Free) is difficult as most where saved and cherrished and will range in grades from AU50 on up.
He knew of my like interest in these Commemoratives and when he stumbled upon this Kennedy, saved it for me. He had never seen one circulated as this one was- due to the rising cost of silver and the hoarding of all silver coins post 1965.

Nothing serious about any of it- it's just fun (that's all). Nothing more.

People submit all the time just to get it in a holder that match their others. There is no limit to the crazyness.

Braddick: That's pretty cool to see the two together....interesting. In fact, I'm still a bit shocked a 1964 Kennedy would actually get that much wear.

I think it would be quite an accomplishment to have it 100% complete with none worse.

Is that FR02 off center? Looks like it could be. I also noticed on the MS67 that president Kennedy has a pretty significant ding on his upper lip. I'm surprised it's a 67.

Pat: I don't think it was a waste of time or money. I actually think it is really cool that such a common coin could be so worn. Do you think all the wear is from circulation only or is there maybe something else going on there?

-It's not offcenter. My photo skills lack the lighting refinement and you are seeing a bit of a shadowing effect.
-It's natural wear. It equals that of worn Liberty Walking or Barber halves. Even under magnification.

I've attempted (not back then, but recently) 'artifical' wear via various methods and none are satisfactory. Even the rock tumbler with strips of blue jean material and/or other coinage doesn't really produce wear that is consistent with long term use in circulation.

In this case the 67 looks like it spent its life in a draw while the 02 spent its life in one person's pocket,
neither of them charmed or working.

Too bad the pop in the registry listing only shows how many higher. It would be interesting to see how many graded lower.

Hey, I thought that I was the only one fascinated with heavily worn modern coins. I found the attached coin in change last year and it is one of my favorite coins. Looks like a 1941 Jefferson. I think that this type of coin is special since it circulated so much and is imbedded with history. Only our imaginations can tell us the people who had this coin in their pockets and where the coin has been. Could it have travelled to Europe during WW2?

I really like that 1964d, but I don't really understand it. 64s were pulled out of circulation so fast because of the silver content, I can't imagine it getting that much use.

What't the pop in MS67? I searched for a long time to find a nice PCGS 1964 Kennedy MS66 for my US Type set.
