Nobody like my other barber quarter, so how about this one?

Since I really like hearing all your opinions on my raw coins (it grounds my opinion), here is another 1892 Barber Quarter for your concideration.

Out of concideration for our bandwidth challenged members, I'll just give links this time.

    AU50-55.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • I'd go xf-45/au but it's a super looking coin! Is it a cud on the top reverse or a slight ding?

I would call it a cleaned EF, but I am not very familiar with modern coins. It almost looks as if the coin was completely toned, then someone tried to clean the toning off of the surfaces. That's why only the exposed fields are white. I also see hairlines, which are also indicative of cleaning. Your quarter from the other day had the same characteristics.

au50 details, wiped/cleaned, I'd be happy to pay XF 40 money for it and put it in an album. Presents pretty well for a circ. coin. Just don't try to slab it.

Hey the coins are getting better! XF+, hairlines from circulation, not cleaning, the fields are white and the areas around the device elements are dark because the raised devices protected the areas around them and didn't allow the circulation the wear the black off.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Dog97, that would mean that the quarter somehow toned in storage, then, afer a few decades, was released back into circulation where the original toning wore off..........not likely. The coin toned naturally, then someone cleaned the coin before taking it to the neighborhood coin store to sell off ole' unclu Waldo's collection. .........just a theory.

    Exactly.
Maybe was saved in a leather coin purse or other holder for a number of years & turned dark then spent & circulated briefly again maybe repeating several times.
Maybe the wide flats of the fields were covered with skin oil from circulation and shielded from toning.
    Maybe it was painted.
Maybe it was cleaned with a pencil eraser.
Maybe I just see a normal lightly circulated coin.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I say au/50, and unless there are hairlines that I can't see from the image, she's ok.

    Draco -

I'm not too wild about this one either. I agree with NumisEd - it's been rubbed. I would prefer to have you wait for a nicer example, especially if you're interesed in an 1892. You can do better.

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
  • Thanks for the input guys (and gals?). I am, however, going to risk the $15 and send it in. I'm not a fan of barber coins and any future one I deliberately get would be in a slab anyway.

I will, of course, let everyone know. Coin begins it's travel to PCGS along with about 14 others tomorrow (four others of them have been posted here for opinions as well).

I'm thinking about making a game out of this. . .guess the grade PCGS will assign and win a prize!!
