Smooth Dime

I found this Dime the other day. Looks to be in very good shape and in original condition. It has smooth sides and deep ridges on both sides. Seems to have been compressed but I can't see signs of tampering. Any ideas? Thanks, Jay

cool coin!! image Looks like it might be a capped die strike to me. But I am sure an error collector here will be able to give more info than me.

It looks like a bezel has been added. The weight would confirm this.

  • Hmmm, compared to another dime I have it seems smaller . . .
  • This could also be done using something as simple as a spoon to tap the edges and smooth out the coin. This used to be a way that sailors on long voyages would make rings out of coins. They would tap the coin to smooth out and build up the edges and then drill out the center of the coin.

I agree, looks like a ring was added to the coin.

    Smooth edge.
    Wider rims than normal.
    Smaller diameter.
    Definitely been altered.
It's been hammered on the edge.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • ...the edge is perfectly smooth though . . .

Jay, ever hear of an emory board. It does a wonderful job. Take it from an old silversmith.

Besides, consider the minting process and what would have to take place to produce a coin like your find.

  • I've seen dimes exactly like that... even smaller. And, you'll never guess where.

    That's right, at the laundramat!

They have some superglued to the bar (yes, I go to a laundramat with a bar in it image). It seems the dimes get stuck in the dryers in such a way that the dryer drum rolls the coins down perfectly... much better than you could do by hammering it down by hand.

  • hmm, I could see where the edges could be worn down but the high edges in combination made me look at it twice.

Spooned. Probably a hammer in reality.
