Recommended reference materials for Barbers

What are the best recommended reference materials out there ? I thought I remembered seeing something by David Lawrence. Would you recommend?

Thanks,
Casey

I have one by David Lawrence for Barber quarters. While it is informative, it mainly shows mintages and he gives his ideas on rarity.

Does it explain why the 1901-S costs so much more than the 1913-s?

There are believed to be fewer than 2,000 1901-S quarters, I think it is said that many went to the far east. The 1913-S was saved in a much larger quantity than the 1901.

Thanks, dbldie55. The low surviving number makes sense. If there aren't any of a date like that on eBay, and there seldom is, they're probably pretty scarce. The darned things are hard to find anywhere, it seems.

I think he probably goes into that. I didn't read the whole book. He gives rarity factors and prices from the past and such.

  • David Lawrence didn't really compare the 1901-S and the 1913-S quarters much in his text. He really just offers the mintage, a discussion of rarity and goes into great lengths on counterfeit detection for both years.

I don't believe there are any good texts for Barber dimes or halfs that I have seen, just David Lawrence's book on the quarters.

The late David Lawrence was The Man. I have his quarter and half-dollar books. Great books, especially if you are interested in diagnostic information. Also, his opinions on rarity, based on 30+ years of specialization, are right on the money in my book.

    Well worth the dough….

Another source is the Barber Coin Collectors society. There is more than ten years of Barber Information. Or you can PM Dave99B and you will get better quarter info than all the barber books and reference material there is.

someone earier today asked a related question about the grading of circ. barbers and how come some dates didn't appear to meet a.n.a. grading standards. I would be very interested to find out if ther is any reference materials or books on strike variations from different years or different mints in the series with illustrations to back up claims that it's acceptable to call a very good barber half a commercial fine because of a weak strike. I've always collected barbers by type, not by date but i would be very interested in reading any materials related to this subject i can find.
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.
