Okay, Jefferson experts, what exactly are these coins?

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Sometimes I buy stuff just because I think it's cool. No rhyme or reason, nothing more than I like it.image That happened when I was back at the show today. Spotted a couple strange Jefferson nickels in a dealer's case. One is a proof, the other matte finish, both are .999 silver.

Here's the proof:

And, here's the matte finish:

So, what the hell did I just buy?

  • I'm guessing maybe just someones own custom Jefferson's. They can't be from 1938 obviously, because the designer has his name printed on Jeffersons lower neck, along with the year 2002. I can't really tell you what they are or where their from, but I'm assuming their not worth much. Just my 5, I mean 2 cents image.

Since I obviously don't know what I'm talking about if you refer to my other post here, can you be more specific please?
  • They are cute and silver is heading up!! (I hope) (I hope)

Russ said they were .999 silver. Obviously, they aren't real coins, which, in my book, means they are silver rounds image

    Jeremy,

They're not silver rounds. They're exactly the same size as regular Jeffs.

    Stigmata,

That's not the designer's initials. It's "FSNC", which means Full Step Nickel Collectors.

  • I have no idea what these are or represent but Monticello looks like Jeffersons' vacation home in St. Kitts!

    Neat coins!

Have not seen these before, but in some ways the reverse looks closer to Schlag's original design for Monticello...the Mint decided it was too "artsy" though and modified it to the more boring desing we see on Jeffersons...and thus created the entire full step controversy!

  • I think if you do a little research you will find that was the original design for the Jefferson nickel as submitted to the Mint by the designer. What we have is the Mint's rendition of that design after they got finished changing it.
    knowledge ........ share it
  • I'm guessing that FSNC is a club that mints it's own coins as a kind of "thank-you" for joining. Still pretty nice, though.image

ok, it seems I'm wrong, nevermind. image

    Danglen,

I think they're cannabis sativa plants; very big ones.

I saw something very similar in an eBay auction a couple months ago - without the punched in letters.

The seller said (who knows how true?) that it was a restrike of an unchosen design.

That is a very interesting design i think it looks much better than the Rev we have now.
  • They are currently being offered by the FSNC. The add reads, " Darrel Crain, President of the Jefferson Full Step Nickel Club, in conjunction with Ron Landis (master dye ingraver of The Galary Mint Museum) and S.E.G.S. presents the Jefferson Nickel 1938 award winning design by Felix Schlag.

A limited production of one thousand nine hundred and thirty-eight (1,938) uncirculated coins and one thousand nine hundred thirty-eight (1,938) proof coins will be struck. They will be .999 silver with a diameter of 21.2mm (standard nickel size). Each encupsulated coin, uncirculated and proof quality, will be numbered 1 through 1938.

This beautiful coin will surely be a collector's item. You may request a specific number or matching numbers for both uncirculated and proof coins on advance orders. Pre-orders on specific numbers will be reserved on a first come first serve basis.

    MATTE UNC. $38.00 PROOF $42.00

FSNC PO Box 10909 Burbank, CA 91510-0909"

    Hope this was helpfull

    Found them!

It's a privately done re-minting of the original design that was later modified. Only 1938 of each were made, and my set is matched number 1838. Probably worth millions of dollars.image

Edit: I need to type faster!

    Why?

    Russ, NCNE
  • I haven't ordered mine yet. I met Daryl Crane at the Santa Clara show and he had some there. I hope I'm not too late in ordering some. The FSNC were going to mint 1938 of each of the proofs and MS as 1938 is the first year of the Jeff nickel. The reverse is Felix Schlag's original design he submitted to the contest they were having for the new nickel design. His design was choosen but they changed the reverse.

Of course I said nothing new that Coinshunter hasn't already said. Welcome to you coinshunter! Clearly you are cool as you know about Jeffersons!!!

Thanks for the thread. I will get my order in the mail tomorrow. I also will join the FSNC even though I collect proofs rather than mint state Jeffs.
