Need appraisal on SBA Dollar Set

I just remembered my father having a SBA complete uncirculated dollar set for 1979 & 1980. The set is in a blue Littleton Coin Company package, containing all the mints for the both of those years. The coins have never been removed from the original packaging. From what I can see there is absoluetly nothing wrong with the coins. Most are at the beginning stage of toning. I tryed getting a scanner picture of it but my scanners screwed up. Based on the things I'm telling you, what do you think the value may be?

  • My focus isn't SBAs, but I do collect them from time to time so. . . .

That would, of course, depend on the grade. The pop report for PCGS says there is only one MS68 for 79-P, 3 for 79-S, and 2 for 80-P. Nothing graded higher. I don't have many things from Littleton because they are over priced, but what I do have seems to follow their claim of being "hand picked" so your dad's sets should be in pretty good condition. The 1980-S would be the more valuable of the group and if the 79-P is a wide rim variety, it's worth a bit more. My guess would be about $200-$250 unless you had them graded and they came back higher than 66. The wide rim variety of the 79 is trending somewhere around 190.00 for MS66, but I really don't know much about that since I don't have one.
  • Thanks for the information. Another quick question, do you have an idea on what I should look for on trying to grade these myself? Like any certain spots that wear more then others, or any such things as that?
  • SBAs are generally only valuable as "condition rarities", and the reason they are expensive in the high grades is because they are tough to find that way.

So I'm sorry, but it's about 99% likely that your coins are worth maybe $12.00 at the most. I've purchased some of those sets over the years and the coins are nothing special.
  • PS -- I'm assuming you're talking about a 6-coin uncirculated set, 1979-PDS and 1980-PDS.

Yeah thats correct. Beh, I thought I had something valuable for once heh. Oh well.
  • I stand corrected. . .

    SBA 1979 PDS

    SBA 1980 PDS

It amazes me how trends, greysheets and PCGS can vary SO MUCH from what they go for on ebay. Maybe Ebay should have it's own trend sheet. image

I have lots of slabbed proof SBAs and I'm nearly certain that the lowest price I paid for any of them is about $80 (hmmm. . lowest grade I think is PR68DC). I still believe that you littleton set is worth a bit more. I'd either have them graded or hold on to them. Don't sell them.
  • Oh yea, thats me buying or bidding on those sets.

  • I need you as a customer! image I'm not sure where you've been buying your slabbed SBA proofs, but the common-date (not Type 2) can be readily purchased for $30-$40 in PCGS PR69DCAM. A really exceptional example a bit more.
