Three of my toned morgans (images)

Hi, I am new to the boards. I have learned more about coins on this board than any where else by far. I have been "lurking" for about 8 months and finally had to join in. Check out the colors on these three morgans. Two are graded pcgs ms65 and one is graded pcgs ms64. What is your opinion on the second morgan, is it end of roll toning? I am still trying to figure out how to photograph coins. Any tips would be appreciated.

    THe second one does appear to be end roll toninig, at least because of the presence of that nice wide, bright streak across the top 1/3 or so. Really neat, IMO...gives some separation to the devices.

    That first one is beautiful.... The others are very nice but the fingerprints don't help them

    Very nice! I love the 1882's .......I also happen to be working on that year right now. I need the CC to complete my set. They've gotten so expensive I have to sell a few things to get one. Your absolutely right about the wealth of knowlegde on these message boards! I read every single message!

    This 1884-o is in a NGC ms63 holder. Would this be considered album toning?

    I think the 1901 is album tone. The fingerprint is where someone pressed it into the hole and the X tone pattern is where it kept falling out and somebody taped it in.
    I think the 84-O in the NGC holder is roll tone. The coins were not tightly against each other @ the dark peripherals and the paper fumes seeped in between them.

    Nice coins. The 1901 seems strange with that orange bar - but it was good enough for PCGS I guess.

    Dog, Thanks for the info on the 84-o NGC, I always thought that was album tone. The 1901-o with the wide untoned "bar" on the obverse is some really weird toning. I was told that some times toning that looks like that is caused by being stored in a small kraft envelope. The untoned area is where a rubberband was wrapped around the envelopes holding a stack of these coins in envelopes together. This coin would have been on the top(or bottom) of the stack. For some reason rubber bands neutralize the sulfer in the kraft envelopes.

    Anyone else hear of rubber band toning??

    These are from that same group. All are in 2nd generation holders except the coin in the 1st picture. The 1st coin is a 65, 2nd is a 64 and the 3rd is a 65.

    The 84-O could be album tone, it was the dark almost blue black rev that made me think roll but it does go around the periph like an album would do. It could be bag toned on obv & album on rev & other combinations.
    I don't want to agree with the rubberband because they usually leave black lines. Also if the small end flap of an envelope was tucked inside the white line is about where it would touch.

    Hello fivecents and welcome aboard! I agree that the 1901 is probably album toned, but I believe the 84-O in the NGC holder is bag toned. You mentioned that they were in second generation holders, and this would explain the dark colors forming around both sides of the NGC coin. If you look at the holder, you will notice an absence of the strip that was put in later NGC holders just below the label. This was added to future holders to stop the reaction of the paper insert and the coin. I'll bet the insert itself is no longer the original color either! I was only made aware of this recently when I sat down with a fellow board member to compared our toned coins, and he recommended that I have my first/second generation NGC coins reholdered before they got any darker. image

    I agree with Hadleydog on the 84-O. Based on the colors and pattern, it would appear to be bag-toned with a slight addition of color around the rims which could have come from the old NGC holder. I've seen many coins in these older holders that possess a light golden rim tone....while not unattractive, I've heard more than one owner express surprise at finding the color after years of storage.

    Having said all of that, bag-toned dollars can pick up some crazy patterns depending on how the coin sat in the bag.

    Sorry, the NGC ms63 84o is in a new holder with the small square hologram. I was talking about the 1st three coins in 2nd generation holders and forgot about the 4th coin.image. The ngc coins rim toning is amber and bright blue. My coin photography is not that good, I can't seem to capture the luster and that makes the toning look dark.
