use your imagination for a verbal "guess the grade" Please, opinions needed

o.k. heres my story; A little over a year ago i baught a 1877 cc seated quarter graded m.s. 67 after seeing an image of the coin on the heritage website. When i got the coin my first inspection i was stunned at the eye appeal of the luster and pretty edge toneing and new i wanted to keep it at what i thought was a reasonable price' On closer inspection of the obverse how ever, i spotted a snall "hit or mark' in the obverse fields to the left near the second star from the bottom, while not very large or disstracting, it is visible to the naked eye holding the coin up to about 18-24 inches from my eyes. So if a mark deep enough to be seen with the naked eye from a distance of up to 2 feet away on a other wise clean seated quarter with full luster as i described merit the grade of 67, or will it down grade to 66 ? I just sent this coin in for the guarentee process and would like your opionion. Oh, b.t.w., if your wundering why i kept the coin instead od returning it to heritage is because the coin has stunning eye appeal, so if p.c.g.s. reviews the coin and confirms the technical grade, fine i have some assurance, but if they downgrade the coin i've chosen to keep my coin and get the new grade and get some cash back.

Barberlover you say you bought the coin at what you thought was at a reasonable price.
If the coin happens to get downgraded a notch for that small hit you mentioned how much would you stand to lose moneywise?
Did PCGS did certify the coin originally?

Gemini, to anwer your questions, first, the coin was already in a p.c.g.s. 67 slab when i baught it, if it wasn't i wouldn't be able to use the grading guarentee on a non p.c.g.s. coin. As far as how much i'd loose if they downgrade the coin, that deepends on what the powers that be at p.c.g.s. decide is the market value difference between 66 and 67. but if they pay truely fair market value between the 66 and 67 levels, then i won't lose very much if they pay most of the difference in cash. The point of my question was do you think a hit visible to the naked eye from 2 feet from yor face can be called 67 if the coin has full luster and stunning eye appeal? One more thing, please give me first crack at your o mint seated half after you have it slabbed. barberlover

If you say the coin is as nice as it is and when they graded the coin I am sure they took this hit into consideration and they will stand by the grade assigned so really have nothing to worry about.
Also a question; to be an MS 67 coin does the coin a to be perfect or flawless?

I am not much up on this new grading criteria nor am I a perfectionest I like above average coins with nice color and strike and I don't worry about some small visible defect here or there. For older coins I have resolve not look for or expect to find a perfect anything for I probably would never find it and even if I did probably then couldn't afford it. We all have our expectations but I have mellowed mine a bit.
Coins I have bought in the past are not perfect by todays standards but most of them are attractive and I am content in being their caretaker.

As I mentioned before in a previous post business strikes entered circulation in the crudest of ways were manhandled and horse handled and were not shipped from the mint in some cutesy protective packages.

I really think that the collectors of today expect and demand a perfect quality from these older coins will never be happy as perfect old business strike coins are rarer than hens teeth...

I promise I will keep you posted on the 1856-O image
