Anyone want to be a coin dealer in Northeast Florida?

I originally posted this as a response to Laura's (Legend) thread, but then thought I might actually get some interest if I started a new thread. Anyone wanting to discuss the issue with me can PM me with their phone number, and I'll be happy to give you a call.

Three years ago I was daytrading the securities market from my computer. Then the market went into the doldrums, and I spent many days and weeks just staring at the monitor, not being able to trade because there was no serious movement in the market.

During that time, just to have something to do, I started offering some of my coin accumulation on eBay. I had been buying coins since 1972, but not really collecting in the true sense of the word. The coins I offered sold, so I put up more. They sold, and at some point I realized I was running out of inventory. So I went to my first coin Show (FUN 2001) and bought more material. I met some dealers that were very fair and sold me good material at a fair price, and I also met some dealers that took me to the cleaners. I still deal with the prior, and cast hexes on the latter when I go by their tables at the shows I attend.

It became very obvious to me that I needed some education very quickly. So I enrolled for two weeks of ANA Summer camp in 2001 and have continued the practice since then. That has really paid off very handsomely.

This past year I had my first six figure sales year on the internet, which is pretty neat considering the fact that most of the coins I sell are in the $10 to $50 range. I love what I do, roll out of bed in the morning and walk up a flight of stairs to my office. Always get a kick out of seeing what coins sold while I was sleeping. Am at the point now where I could seriously expand the business, but need to find someone with good computer skills that would help me grow the business. They would have to relocate, but there are a lot of less desirable places to live than beautiful Northeast Florida.

I have committed to sharing a booth at next years FUN Show, which would be my first coin show as a seller, but don't like the idea of doing too many shows. The internet is giving me all the advantages of a global market, without many of the hassles associated with a brick and mortar store.

I can't say that I ever dreamed of being a coin dealer, but funny things happen if you let them.

  • Florida is on my list of possible relocation areas, but I don't think I'd be much help because I'm going the opposite route -- coin dealing to securities trading. image

I hope we're both right -- good luck with your new venture!

If you give up your rights, in order to maintain your freedom. You will most likely end up losing both!

I have the skills you seek and the desire, but would never relocate to Florida. I like my climate; 25 degrees today with snow flurries and three inches on the ground. Low temp last night of 4 above. I consider snow storms "good" weather.

If you are serious about finding someone to partner with for web applications, coin experience, etc., I am serious but you couldn't get me to move. If, by chance, you are still interested, send me a message.

    Jeremy,

If you are refering to Embry-Riddle University, it's just down the road, about thirty minutes from my house. You could do coins AND planes. I was accepted at ERAU about 34 years ago, but wound up going to the Florida Institute of Technology's Aerospace Technical Institute in Melbourne for my pilot's license image However, as bright as you are, I can definitely see MIT in your future image
