Boy Were The Illinois State Quarters Aweful!

I bought (4) $25 bags of the coins directly from the mint (at $35/bag). Average grade on the 400 coins was around MS62.5 I believe!! No coin was remotely close to an MS67!! Looks like Mint sets will be the place to find these coins in high grade, as usual.
Anyone else have any better luck with the Illinois state quarters?

Has anyone else also noticed the quiet rise in slabbed state quarter prices over the past 60-90 days? And, what is with those OH(p) state quarters in MS68? No question, they have doubled in price in the past 30 days - is that purely do to OHIO winning the national championship in the same year as their state quarter release? They sold out nearly instantly on my site between $50-$60/coin (some people buying 10-20 coins) when they were languishing for months at less than $40. Now, I see them selling at $100+/coin despite the "pop" of OVER 500!! Interesting indeed image Wondercoin

In Coinage, there was an article by Scott Travers on the ten best coin buys for 2003 or some such thing. He cited the Ohio quarters (I forgot whether it was the P's or D'S) as a best buy. Scott has a great following and I've noticed that his recommendations move the market.

  • Mitch, I've looked through two roll sets of Illinois Quarters and my best P-mint would probably grade 65 at best.
As far as the D-mint coins go, There are a couple of possible 67's (more likely 66's), but still I'll wait till the mint sets come out to submit any.

Greg: Interesting. Am I wrong in my recollection that Travers was strongly opposed to ultra-modern coins in his suggestions in recent times? Now, he is picking a state quarter as a "top 10" performing coin? Interesting.

I have also seen a number of other state quarters from 1999-2001 roughly double in price in the past 120 days in the top grades. Take a coin like the NY(d) in PCGS-MS68. PCGS has graded just -2- examples (last time I checked) in MS68. Both of those coins are in strong hands (one in the registered #1 set). Collectors/ dealers/ investors have been searching bags, rolls, mint sets for 2 years now trying to "make" a NY(d) quarter in MS68. I slabbed one and Datentype from our boards slabbed the other - even the largest "producers" of state quarters in the land (who slab literally hundreds, if not thousands, of MS68 coins per year have been unable to ever slab a SINGLE example of the NY(d) in MS68!! Heck, this coin in MS67 grade has been trading recently on ebay for well over $500 and it is pretty easy to see why!

I guess I personally won't be surprised to see a few more "special" state quarters (like the NY(d)) start appearing on "top 10" lists in the years ahead image Wondercoin

I might be the lucky one on the Illinois quarters in high grade. I sent in several ms67's and might possibly land an 8. The problem is, I can't get PCGS to finish off an invoice. - they either can't do it right or can't even get to it.
