Has anyone found a counterfiet card?

I have seen it posted that there are 15,000 cards out there involved in this WIWAG scam. Others have said 5,000. I don't know where those numbers came from, or if they are real or not.

Some have said that it would be fairly easy to spot a fake holder, or one that had been tampered with.

I have several thousand PSA vintage cards, many bought from WIWAG, but I can't find anything wrong with any of them. Has anyone found any they know are fake? Is it that the forgeries are so good? Or that we don't know what to look for? Or that there are considerably less cards involved?

Any thoughts?

Someone somewhere has the answers to at least a couple of those questions.
Hopefully they will share some info with us soon.

    Rob,

I pulled out all my WIWAG purchases and examined them very closely. My most expensive card was a 1957 Topps BB #1 Ted Williams. The card and holder are perfect. I'ts an 8 on the cert verification site. It's on the registry with no problems. Looking at it, the card is a true 8. The holder shows no marks of any kind under 10x magnification. Same is true of my other purchases. Again we're just speculating, but based on my purchases [from 2000-2002] I can't imagine this being a widespread problem. No doubt some cards are affected, but the numbers quoted sofar are out of line.

  • I am still wondering what this is all about. Is there anything online that actually says anything substantial or real? There have been charges made in a press release, but I haven't seen anything that says for sure that this is about faking slabs.

  • brucemo - So far its all speculation with a touch of hysteria. You probably know all of the facts there are to know right now.

Anything may be true, but there are no facts aside from the press release right now.

Didn't find a counterfiet card but possibly an accessory to the making of one.

I'm not excatly too clear on the whole matter what they've actually done. The press release can be easily misconstrued.

"by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations or promises that the sports cards sold were of the quality represented."

cards sold by the defendants over the Internet were purported to have been graded by PSA when, in fact, they were not. Consequently, the cards did not merit the grades defendants represented them to have.

So far, all we know is WIWAG was charged with fraud. No fake holders, or fake cards have been confirmed but this is what the interpretation is collectively by the average person here.

Collectors Universe and its PSA division expect no material financial impact resulting from claims related to the disclosed fraud matter. This is not the end for PSA!!!

This is my favorite part of the release:"We are dedicated to protecting collectibles consumers from fraud and misrepresentation in any form. We also fervently value our brand name. We will continue to work to protect collectors, and our own reputation, zealously."

Anti PSA folks have taken the ball with the speculations and jumped quickly to try instilling fear upon PSA collectors but I'm not buying into the scare. However,I'm just as concerned as everyone else but my gut tells me at the end of this whole mess PSA will just be fine and so will the rest of us.
  • I agree with you RobE. PSA will be fine.

So far, no one has come on to say they have found a counterfiet in their stack. Either the counterfiets are real good, or very rare.
