SGC loses it's last qualified grader

OK the title should have read "last qualified vintage grader" the guys they still have are mostly schooled in modern (or so one personally told me 6 weeks ago).

from the network 54 web-site (an sgc faithful site):
""Derek Grady is now at Mastronet
January 17 2003 at 6:18 PM leonl
from IP address 12.96.18.196

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bombshell is that Derek officially now works for Mastronet. He starts work on Monday. I think this will be a good thing for everyone. The other 2 vintage graders at SGC are experienced and well versed in grading. They actually have done a lot of the grading and Derek would look at the cards as they left. After speaking at length with several dealers and collectors, and Doug Allen, I feel all is well....Congrats to Mastronet and Derek.....fyi Louis Bohlman (sp?) is no longer with Mastronet either.....regards all

I guess this explains why my order dropped off in early december at Fort Washington (all obscure regionals) has been unexplicably delayed and all they have for me is double talk about running out of holders. The last member of the "gang" won't even take my calls or return them.
Look for a substantial run of nearly complete '50's regional sets all SGC graded in Mastro's next auction. They are all harshly graded and if I weren't consumed with nausea, PSA would be regrading them.

The window of opportunity for Global seems to have just flew wide open.

  • It's funny, all the fellas on the Network 54 board were going on about how Derek was the best grader ever and that's why SGC was so great, cool, hip, insync, yadayadayada. Now, they say it don't mean squat and yadayada SGC still has 2 of the 3 best graders in the business. image

    Which is it?

That Network 54 has seemed to turn into the Wentz brothers personal forum for bashing PSA and spreading absolute rubish.
  • Murcer man, you must have then read about my expert restoration of cards submitted when they ( SGC*)started and that after they graded them I called and told then president Joe Merkel I restored them! I figured after 20 years of paper restoration including 1500 plein air oil on canvas paintings that I would give vintage cards a whirl Wella baby.................my forensic background paid off even though I did not sell the cards to anyone was barked at and hammered at for "testing the waters" on slab submittals. But then.......my motto is:

"Ted Kennedy is My designated driver"

I can detect any altered card nad have tools of the trade to do so effectively.

wouldn't coin collecting or knitting or something be more fun for you ?
sounds like sportscards just ain't your bag
  • what do you mean? I have been collecting them for well over 35 years and have done probably as many deals with folks as you have had heartbeats! I also either own or have owned many of the finest examples of rare cards in the collecting hobby. And besides my friend, in response to your suggestion, I have also owned two coin shops,a card shop and a jewelry store. I have plenty of PCGS graded coins.paintings however are far more profitable than most other forms of collectibles as each is a pop* of one! I did not just come out of the collectors closet jumpin cheese Lu-eeze!

Brian Wentz does not post on the network54 board! And yes,it is SGC bias but this board is not doubt PSA bias as both is prudent.
  • Caramels is quite an established collector with many remarkable cards, very knowledgeable and spends most of his time playing with them, other than the occasional break to crank out more sets of twins. What is it now, 7 or 9 rugrats? image

This could only be one person. Welcome aboard Caramels! Your arrival is long overdue!
  • Dan,you are a gem in the post war error of card collecting. A very in the know guy!Murcer man does not know me and apparently has issue with all the impropriatous things that people do with cards due to the vast amount of money involved is warrented. just not with me! I do not need his money,I have a wife that works!* lol*.What he falls to realize is that I have done nothing to enhance his fears and yet I have both a family history of collecting and love cards! I really do not need his vitriolic imput to know what is going on.He also does not realize what I know or he would think that maybe I could be of some help to him rather than lay into me and suggest to a man,me,who by buying millions of dollars of cards and is good for the hobby should start knitting.Pleaseeeeeeeee Murcer! I spend no less than 10 hours a week at the gym my arms are way too big for such things as knitting. And besides,as Zardoz has implied and dan can attest, I surely have a few daughters to knit me stuff as needed my friend. Now,I would hope to be able to consult you on cards and card sets I am not familar with ( newer stuff*) and also contribute a little.Heck,I sold loups that were corrected for curve-ate-ture on the other board so guys would be able to spot trimmed cards much easier.Murcer,do you know I found no less than 156 cards PSA certified that are trimmed after getting those loups!! O.K.,forget knitting! Send me scans of ALL you're cards so I can inspect them for you! You see,I know what's going on too! I am just not as prim and proper and conservative as....Oh let's say Dan who just posted above and I have done no less than 50 deals with. Murcer, maybe you ended up with some of those cards! let me know....if any of them are altered or did not meet your approval I will send you some cash ala Paypal and have all my children write you an appology note!

    Brian,
when you click on a link it may be opening a new window or version of your browser, if you have multiple versions open it may be refreshing one of the other versions. that could be the trouble you're having.
This is of course if you use windows, which is unlikely based on your dislike of Mr. Gates. Mac users might be better suited to help you.
  • you clearly have some terrific cards! I will see if I have anything under my children's beds to trade/sell you in the near future.
"Dink" Duel Income No kids" right? I'm close! Only 8 children from it.......one of them even collects cards! Tow knit and all of them learn Jui-Jitsu on the garage mats from dad, Ex-Air Force middle weight champion and Putz supreme!image Change your handle to "Tango Egg" expert-NOT!

That is a great idea! I enjoyed that a lot.....I did fairly well as I recall.....I even remember some Putz named "Scorched earth" trying to nub in on my turf! Let's do it again..........I want the giant winnings to buy more high numbered 72 topps baseball and "Good Times" cards. I bought some unopened packs just to look through them just last night on E-gay!
