  • Barney - IMO if it bothers me I send it back. Don't spend that kind of money on a coin if you don't like it. A rim bump can be innocuos or distracting, its your call.
  • Send it back $1.2K is to much to pay for a coin that is not exactly what u want.

  • Obviously, if you purchase a coin you do not want and have the opportunity to return it, do so.

That said, I am not surprised. $20 CC's tend to sell at or above Trends for problem free coins and above Trends for exceptional examples. The fact that this is a "problem" coin does not surprise me given the amount you paid for it.

Is the finish "dull" or is the coloration darker than you expected? The original deep green or orange is typical, and I much prefer to the dipped bright yellow color/finish that is increasingly common.

All in all, you probably paid near what the coin is worth, but if you are not satisfied, return it.

Unless it was a rare and hard to replace issue, I tend to send the coins back. If it bothers you now, you will never be able to look at that coin without focusing on the rim bruise. Even if the coin is purchased at a discount, I don't keep it.

Without seeing the coin, its nearly impossible to offer an opinion. Instead, here are a few things to consider... (1) How significant is the rim ding? If its bad, one could ask how it was even slabbed... (2) Is the coin well struck fot he date? (3) Does the coin have nice original surfaces and color? Original CC gold is rare and don't confuse brightness with lustre (4) Does the coin exhibit distracting hairlines? (5) How does it compare with other $20 CC Libs (from the early-mid 1880s)? Think about the coin as a whole, then make the decision.

Agreed. "Dull" (at least) will fester.
  • Thanks for the replies. The seller is nice and is from the town where my "alma mater" is. I will try to scan the image. The scan will
be a bit blurry but you will be able to see the color and the bump.

Now, how do I change this into a viewable URL?

    Thanks again,

Ask yourself, would I still like this coin at some lesser price? If so let the seller know that you are ready to return it, but also let him know that you could justify keeping it if he would take the lesser price. If the dealer is in a cash flow situation where he has the opportunity to pick up something else with the funds (or has already spent the funds by committing to another acquisition) he might actuallly prefer to let you have it even if he ends up selling it to you for what it cost him. Don't worry, if your offer is for less than he paid for it he will let you know immediately and there is no point to argue the point if that is his response. Just return it graciously. The dealer wants you to be a happy customer because he is in it for the long haul and appreciates that there may be something else more to your likeing down the road.
  • I would be very interested to see the coin. I would also be very interested to learn how to convert an image to a URL!
  • reposted for coinkat and anyone who might be interested. the url is very long...linkification is welcome.
