Idea-> Guess The Grade ->Ultimate Website

Between the photo experts, scanner experts, the grading experts, coin experts and the HTML experts... wouldn't it be something if everyone could put their two cents (no pun intended) together and create a web site devoted to coins.

Links to a "Guess The Grade" Challenge in which the visitor attempts to correctly guess the grade of the coin. Coins would come up at random and you grade them. Each time you correctly grade a coin correctly, you move onto the next coin. Monthly winners receive...??? a give-a-way?? ...or just accolades.

Another link would be similar to "photograde" in which you could click on "JFK's 1965-1990" (for instance) and you would find images that scale the grading platform. AU-50--->MS70.

We could have expert articles on Pennies by none other than Copper Coin.
The JFK Page by Russ
Coin Commentary by Doops
50's Music by Lucy Bop
The Best of Ebay (Deb...etc...etc)

Wow... this idea has me exhausted, let me know when you guys are done, I'd like to see it image
I'm kidding, I can help too! I have done a few webpages:

It would be interesting to do, and quite helpful. But I think it would be amusing seeing us all try to coordinate and cooperate in such a venture! Maybe it is not true in other fields, but in computer programming... unless you have a standard or policy, every programmer who likes to work differently than another will make it their mission in life to oppose the other and evangelize their own position. I used to be 100% that way. Now I'm only 75% that way, now that I'm getting older. image

Like I said, I'm 75% that remark these days. You should have seen me when I was in college. Evangelizing the Macintosh to death. Now I work with Microsoft .NET on a dell computer... Ahh, how money and job changes everything! image
  • nwcs,

We've only got 3 programmers where I work, and I'm the only one who does things the right way. image

We take it to a new level, though. As far as we're concerned, all problems are hardware related.... and the hardware guys stick with, "It must be the software."

Oh, but the problems aren't all hardware. The OS is also to fault!
  • Bah. This would be simple to create this website. The only thing is me getting my hands on these photos. IF I had the photos I could set it up including the Ebay sale values for the coins in the picture.

    Well.... that's a given!

I have to interface with custom-built data acquisition boards, so in this case the hardware is definately suspect. Solder one wire in the wrong place, and we're at work all night trying to track down the bug.

  • Braddick...Where? here? The only thing that is personal about this website is the message board. There really is nothing on this website to educate us, the price guide is never updated, As I newbie, I hope that everyday I can go to a website and read something new other than how "HOT...HOT...HOT" some coin show was.

    (I'm not bashing you)

I learn a great deal by the people who post on the message board but the rest of the site has nothing along the lines of education... atleast something that is updated regularly. Coppercoins in a recent message mentioned posting about D/D/...Etc but what will eventually happen, that posting will eventually disappear.

When Coppercoins posts his message, I would love to post it to a website and enshrine it for all the newbies to read on a day in and day out basis.

I want links to websites... I want Russ to do an article on JFK's... what is an SMS, what is an accented hair JFK, show us what to look for when it comes to JFK's. I want "George Jefferson" to teach us about Nickles and Quarters and the changes throughout the years. What to look for ...etc.

I want real coin collecting knowledge from the board members here because each and every person has an expertise in some area.

...I just think it will make the world a better place. image

    I,d like to see this site add more forum catagories.ie; 1/2 cent / Large cent forum.Small cent forum.1/2 Dime and Nickel forum.Dimes forum,Quarters forum,Half Dollars forum,Dollar coins forum,Proof coins forum,Gold coins forum,Slabbed coins forum,etc...
In other words, more specific areas to go to rather than just US coins.

  • I am ALWAYS open to suggestions of things for my site. Notice I said suggestions as I can't do everything and I am a typical computer dictator. (It's good to be the King! image ) but I get all sorts of ideas from reading about what people are interested in.

A major problem of mine is that I am not a huge expert in any one single area. I do know a little about quite a bit but that makes it difficult for me to write definitive articles on specific things. However, if anyone wants to write and see their name in the Limelight with credits, etc...I have plenty of webspace. image

My site is 99% about my love of the hobby and my desire to provide 'something' that may be helpful, educational, or at least fun. The other 1% is an attempt to make back half of my hosting fees every year. image

This board is a great resourse of information. The only problem is that, even though it is archived, it is somewhat difficult to go back and find stuff and stuff is easily 'buried' if you miss a day or two (sometimes even an hour or two). I have had probles finding threads that were less than a month old when searching for them after I forgot the title. There is quite a bit of stuff on this forum that would do well by being an article somewhere. The post I just read by Mark Feld about grading is an excellent example.

Anyway, if you do have suggestions, PM me, email me (stujoe@ thestujoecollection.com) or make up a thread here and open it up for discussion. I do get way behind in reading here if I happen to miss a few days though so if I don't respond, PM me.

  • stujoe, is their any possibility to telling the person the actual grade of the coin after they vote? Because most people will be able to just view the results, and then vote for the one everyone else seems to vote for.
  • I know what you mean and I would like to have total 'blind' voting but without setting up something to make people register before voting, it presents another problem. The script uses cookies to track whether you have voted or not. People who block cookies would have to vote each time they wanted to see the results which I think might lead to some multiple votes by people coming back to see the results. I have decided against a registration system for the voting because I think it would lead to less participation.

However, I agree that it is a good idea not to be able to see the results until you have voted and I think I might try it and leave out the View Results link in the Challenge this week (after I figure out a coin to put up) and put something on the results page about bookmarking it if they don't use cookies and want to see the results later.

    Edited to add:

I am always looking for coins to put up in the grading challenge. So, if anyone has a coin they would like to see in the challenge, let me know. Raw, Slabbed, MS, Circ, Common or Key. It doesn't matter. As long as the picture is clear, about 400x400 pixels in size (I can always shrink larger pictures), and is about the same quality of picture that you usually see on the Grading Challenge (and I see pictures here all the time that are much better than mine) , I am open to putting it up. The only other thing is that it has to be your coin picture so as to avoid any copyright issues. I always offer to provide a credit and a link to auctions, website, etc. Same goes with the museum pictures.
