I've always had one trade dollar. Never felt the need for more. I'm not sure if there would be enough general collecting interest in the series to allow it to get "hot". Should we start a movement Michael??
As a Trade Dollar specialist, I'm not sure they will ever get hot. Just too few of them out there for a big population of collectors. Cost is another factor. Nice examples MS-63 of non-rare dates are in the $$$$ range. Rarity is another issue, many would get frustrated with the series because it can take years to find a nice example of say a 73-CC in just AU-58. I noted that the prices at FUN actually seemed like they had come down a little recently.
Now onto the reason that I collect them. A beautiful heavy coin, short series but very challanging series, GREAT VALUE for the money (ie price to rarity ratio is very good relative to other series), full of varieties; Type I and Type II obverse and reverses, DDR's and DDO's (some of these are amazing); true mm size rarities, etc. Basically, after ten years of intensive work on the series, I've come a long way but I sometimes still discover stuff (misplaced digits, etc.). If anyone wants a primer on the series and what I just talked about just PM with eMail and I'll send you a copy of a article that I wrote for the Gobrecht Journal (reagarding business strike varieties) that I wrote a few years back. TDN's website and Bowers Encyclopedia are other references.
Basically another one of those "labor of love" series where many tend to hold onto them for a long time.
Nice big chunk of silver, always a major type coin(own opinion) too odd for the younger folks?dosent fit into a reg holder? JUST CANT GET NO RESPECOTECT. personally have always thought the trade $ as a class act!!!!!!!!!!!!!
