Any Shield Nickel Die Variety Experts Out There?

It looks like an RPD but there seems to be a 1 under the 8.
Is this a known variety?image

    No rays nickel...
  • Not an expert on these, but I'm getting a red "x." Maybe that's why there's no responses? image

Looks more like a DD. Is there any other doubling on the coin?

There was a repunched date in 1866, but if they exist for 1867 it wouldn't be a large quantity.

  • Certainly looks like it could be, but I'm not sure. There are a ton of repunched and misplaced dates for shield nickels. I looked in the latest Cherrypickers' Guide but didn't see any that exactly matched this one. Of course the CG doesn't have all of them. image

Only other doubling I see is in the same area.Just above the date, bottom of the shield,in the stylized curved
talon-like device. And in the `dot` device next to the `talon`
I thought that too.Maybe its some rotated hub type?
That 8 in the date is odd though.

the alleged "1" under the 8 is almost certainly die erosion, extremely common on shield nickels. ie, constant striking of metal against metal causes areas of concentrated detail, such as the "8", to erode the loosely supported metal in that area of the die.

note i am basing this speculation w/out the privilege of seeing your coins, but what you describe is often misattrib'd as a mint error, if your not too familiar w/ the series (i don't consider myself a specialist, but just from years of observing)

    hope this helps

I think there are over 50 different repunched date varieties just for this date. I'm sure it's one of them. Yours looks very obvious. Neat.

  • I'd have to see the coin in person but from the scan it looks more like MDD mechanical damage doubling also called strike doubling.

While it may have a doubled die, a doubled ide would not result in doubling on the date. The date was punched into the already hubbed die just before hardening.
