New member / question...

Hello all,
A few days ago I sent in my first submission. 250 cards on the set registry special. This was primarily 1972 - 1978 baseball and basketball. I guess I'll find out how good my 'eye' is on these.

Question: I was going to send in 100 cards on the 7.00/card vintage common. I have never seen an explanation of what cards were eligible other than the 'any card 1974 and earlier' on the pricing page. The cards I was going to send in are a mixture of stars and commons. Is it 'any' card, or just commons. Those of you who have sent in 100+ orders with stars... is this the pricing you have paid?
And yes, I saw the special announced today. Some of your comments made me skeptical that I can send in the stars.

Thanks, Don

Don - I posed this question on the 'question and answer forum'.
The post has expired, but the answer was something like :

Commons mean commons and not stars, but it really hasn't been enforced,
but plans are to enforce it in the near future, or something like that.

Anyway, I think you're okay with whatever you send in unless it's only a bunch of multiples of stars.

Welcome to the boards. Sorry I am not exactly sure about the grading special, but I
thought I'd welcome you here anyway. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to
    answer your question.

  • My discussions with the customer service reps at PSA have led me to believe that the submission category "vintage commons" - means what it says - commons, not stars. The same is not true for the Set Registry Special, which is for any card, common, semi-star, or star that meets the years set forth in the title of the set registry special. The next special - is more narrow is scope limited to pre-1972 and ONLY FOR COMMONS NEW SET REGISTRY SPECIAL

  • Don-

You'll be very happy with PSA.

I have never submitted stars w/ commons...smirk, smirk...actually, you should be o.k. as long as it's a small percentage of the whole package.

  • I personally never worry about if i send in stars or commons, i just meet the required years and if they want to nit pick and not slab the stars then fine, but more often they will just go ahead and slab 'em.

    Don, Welcome to the board!!

I would think in the intrest of all, that when PSA says "commons", they mean ...well commons!!

I know that PSA reads these boards all the time. I also think they take notes...

If you have a pile of star cards ready to go in, just wait a while....... There will be another "special" that comes along...... Better to be a "player" of the Registry rather than a "see what I can get away with" participant........ It all works out at the end of the year anyway...

I think that PSA started this special to give the vintage guys a break on completing their sets (remember that building a early set, usually includes about 90% "commons"...)

LMK if you get any PSA 8 dup's out of your first order...(I see that there are some 72's...read my signature line...)

    Welcome!

    Thanks to all!
It's good to be back into my cards. I've been reading all the past threads - a great group.
I've been a little bit like an addict lately. My wife goes to the store and I dart to my closet to fish through my '80s to see if I've got a nice Johnny Bench for the guy that needs it (they're all o/c top to bottom). I'm hoping that I can assist some of you in your quests.
I'll let you know on the '72s.
I still haven't decided what I'm going to do. My first year of solid collecting was 1972, so I'm considering working on a registered set from that year. But with limited funds, I may want to work on completing some sets from the '60s (my sets only go back through 1970). I've got some nice 1965 raw cards, maybe I'll start there...
I'll let you all know how the submission went. Best wishes, Don

    Welcome to the Forum

I ask awhile back regarding the registry special , could I slip in a few cards that I dont have registry sets for and Charlie / psa rep said it was no problem. On accident I am really going to test them....I realized it yesteday I sent in a 1962 card...and it was a 72 and newer special. I had a case of the stupids. I am fairly certain they will grade it and never mention a word. But if they do I have no problem with it. PSA is Very understanding and fair! And about the 1961....I sent image

  • Regarding the question of what PSA grades for $7 in the Vintage Commons category, when it was originally set up, PSA indicated that they were not going to take the value of the card into account. In my discussions with other authorized dealers, we all agreed that that was our understanding of this issue. Grading was to be based on the time taken to do the grading and return the cards without regard to the value of the cards. If you wanted it done faster, you'd pay more. If you didn't care if it took 45 days, you could pay less. The change from "value" to "time" grading pre-dates Joe Orlando's tenure.

Now, however, it appears PSA is trying to limit the $7 submissions to commons only. In my opinion, they never announced a formal change in policy (at least neither I nor any other PSA dealers I spoke with ever received a policy change announcement). They seem to be relying on the change they made to the submission form indicating that the $7 fee was for "vintage commons". From my discussions w/ PSA people, it sounds like a crack down may be forthcoming but it hasn't happened yet. It is a little tougher for them to bear down on the people who give them so much business, you the Set Registry people as well as their stable of authorized dealers, when there is a lot of competition in the marketplace.
