I think I got nailed......

I purchased 8 rolls of lincs dated 59p+d 60 p+d 61p+d and 62p+d.They were suppose to be BU un searched.I purchased them on E-Bay about 5 or 6 weeks ago.He also stated they were in the original rolls. When I received them they were in a clear plastic tube.As soon as I seen that I new I had been HAD.The Lincs looked real good from the outside.I've been trying for a week to get them out of the container,so far I was able to get 22 pennies out of the container. They were all very clean with a real nice finish but the trouble was the stairs and the Lincs profile were all worned(the hair and the beard) How can they be BU with these problems? I sent him a E-Mail and told him what I thought and his reply was"aint never been cleaned" and that was it.Ther are a lot of scum bags out there.I learned another lesson.

  • image You got your lesson cheap. You didnt pay 1700.00 for a 75.00 Morgan Dollar with wild toning on it. Watch out for your fellow man. He will take you for 50 dollars and will just as quickly take you for 2000.00.

Somebody here had a good way of getting coins out of the those old tubes but I can't remember how they did it? I kind of think it was to freeze the tube then break it? mike

I like Darktone's suggestion. Put water into the tube, seal it, freeze it, and let it explode. Then, just let the water on the coins melt off. Pat dry.

The idea is to put the tube of coins in a freezer. The coins will contract and will be easier to remove from the tube. Same with silver eagles in mint tubes. Be sure to let the coins warm to room temp before putting in albums or flips or whatever.

  • There are a couple of types of old tubes that pose problems. The two types shrink after time and litterally encase the coins. With Cent rolls the tubes are usually thin and if you can pry the top few coins out then you can cut into the platics depending on the hardness, I then like to peel it around and down. Extracting a few coins at a time. If this is what you are encountering then you do have pretty original rolls put away some time ago. The Early 60's Lincolns suck so what you are describing sounds very typical.

Now if you have the really soft roll containers, good luck. I still have not figured out a way to get coins out without sacraficing a few to plier, screwdriver and other marks. I usually encounter these on Jeffersons form the early 60's.
  • I'd freeze em. By the way, the same warning about buying raw coins on eBay extends to overexaggerated BU rolls and any toning described as monster, vivid, ect. At least buy from someone you TRUST. Even better, stay with your local dealer if you trust him/her, or if they are a heshe. Kscope

So who was the scum bag?
  • Your typical freezer doesn't get cold enough to really do much good. The real trick is if you can get ahold of some liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen. Dip the tube ito that and the tube just shatters. I haven't tried it but you might be able to do the same thing by packing them in dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) which is easier to come by and saffer to handle (Heavy gloves and/or tongs.) I'd use a hammer to crush the dry ice into smaller pieces so they will make better contact with the tube then pack the dry ice chips arounf the tube for a couple minutes. Remove the tube and if needed tap gently with a hammer and the tube should shatter.

  • Assuming this is the auction you're talking about:

    Auction

It doesn't say "original" rolls in the listing.

There's a large photo showing the coins in plastic tubes.

You paid $10 for $4 face value in coins. (Not quite the m.o. of a true "scumbag."

    Just my humble opinion. image
  • cheap champaigne!
  • Petescorner: Your right,I jumped the gun. That was the auction. What got me P.O.was really the tubes and the fact the coins I did look at were worn and cleaned.Plus he did not give me a true answer.I did get one tube emptied this A.M. and most of those were worn and cleaned.I checked his feed back this morning and it does not show that he's what I said.He had 270 pos. feed backs,so I was wrong about the S.B thing.Thank you for mentioning that.

  • I hope you know what you're talking about before you start complaining. The design details on dies were strengthened by the US Mint in recent years. Detail on the older Lincolns is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from the new Lincolns - they look like different coins. The same can be said for the other denominations. I remember when I saw the first one, I thought it had been tooled!!

  • Redhot: So what you are saying is,the lincolns he sent me came out of the mint with worn down steps and worn cheecks, hair and beards. So, back then this was the norm for those years and others. That's kind of hard to believe.I understand about the changes in equipment etc.How did he know they were BU without looking at the coins. He stated they were un-searched.You can not tell by looking at the edges of coins that are in a clear tube. All you can see is the top and bottom ones. There has only been 2 times over the past 3 years that a customer of mine was not happy with what he received. When this happens,I give a complete refund on the product and all shipping cost back and forth.Plus I let one of the coustomers keep the product.I expect everyone to be fair with me.One was legit and the other was I sent him the wrong record.
The only area I was wrong in( the penny man) was my comment and I sorry for that
