Anyone with input on PCI? How are they as a grading service, I know they're cheap, is it a case of ya get what ya pay for??

Thanks.

Hit the search button on the upper right, you'll find a couple dozen threads discussing them.

  • They are cheap for a reason. They are totally worthless when it comes to grading coins in my opinion. I have an ms70 silver eagle with a big pimple on it in a pci slab. Lesson learned the hard way.

This is my favorite. PCI slabbed a fake 1856 Flying Eagle.

personly I'm not to crazy about them when it comes to the classic but. they sure give me good grades on my state quarters and I only brought BU business stricks they come back at 66 and better it sure looks good in the 66 slabs and don't cost alot. it depends on what you are looking for high grades or true grade. my favorite is IGC they are also cheap, give high grades and have a cool slab. most of the guys here will tell you anything but PCGS are no good. that because we on the PCGS board. sometimes I think they really beleive it.image

  • Macoin, if you plated a block of lead with gold wouldn't that be the same effect as what you just described?

I like PCI for grading whacky, crazy stuff I just don't want to send anywhere else.

They're fast too! I sent a submission of eight on a Saturday (a couple of Saturdays ago) and the coins were returned on a Tuesday, ten days later.
I do wish they would get the lower circulated designators correct. For example, one coin is a no-date (I think it's 1994) Kennedy in PO01- problem free. PCI gave it the "AG02" grade. (They're stingy on the PO01 grade!).
Another coin in the lot was a 1921 Peace dollar with no date. It is the 1921 because you can still make out the high relief, kind of, but the date is worn off.
That one did return as PO01- thank you PCI!
They have stopped grading Gallery Mint Reproductions and stuff, so now I have to use SEGS for those.
Here's one I'm looking forward to having SEGS look at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11946&item=3301960941

  • If you want to keep it and stare at it in all its PCI glory, they are fine. If however you ever possibly want to resell it steer clear.

    My 2 cents

At the Fun show I saw a lot of beautiful toned coins in PCI holders that had the name T.Cork on them. Word was that they started showing up the week before at a show in Clearwater (I think). These coins were selling for REAL strong numbers and some of the bigger toned dealers had them. They were not afraid to step up and pay for these coins.

Just another case of buy the coin not the holder. Some of these coins were stunners.imageimage
