  • AT! I think so because of the toning on the rim.

    I'd bag it.

I would say AT, well because it just doesnt look natural. The blue looks like heat toning, and it goes over the edge, which doesnt usually happen naturally.

  • AT, no depth, Chlorine will do this.

AT I don't see anything natural about it.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

A clever fake. Neon toning on dull surfaces? Plus, an unsuccessful attempt to create a true crescent look.

Definitely AT. The other one referenced in your link doesn't inspire me, either.
  • It's ATed. It appears to have been modeled after a bag toned Morgan with the crescent. Too bad the crescent isn't even a perfect crescent whereas most crescent Morgans are. Plus the colors don't evenly flow in to each other, they have their own little routes they take.

  • Even to my (very) untrained eye, the toning looks just too "good."

AT Collectorkid is right in that the color shouldn't flow over the rim, and the combination and placement of the colors doesn't look right. image
  • image This is a very crude example of what a novice at the AT game can do. Look at some of the coins on EBAY which are common date Morgans(IE 1885's in 64 or 65, 1879-s,1880-s,1881-s) which are 100 dollar coins or less but when they go into a major holder or if they can make it to a "respected dealer" in any holder, then the price is astronomical. I just looked at an ad for an 1885 in ms64 for 1700.00. Watch out for the people who know what they are doing. Most of those 1700.00 coins are done by the people who are really good at what they do and a surprising number are in PCGS and NGC holders. Yes this toning thing is a fad. I enjoy real toning. When you see it there is no mistaking it. Unfortunately most people have never seen it and dont have any idea what it is. They are fed so much slop on EBAY that most people now think that type of toning is real. It is not.

I'm no expert, but I did watch the video floating around and this coin is AT.

Everything about it just doesn't look right...

That toning break at the coin's reverse, 12 o'clock is where the key ring held it in place with plyers.

    Sloppy work.

    eagle7,
You must feel very privileged having the knowledge that toning is a fad, and that you have actually seen coins with genuine toning and know what it is.

you should get a job at PCGS if you can always tell if it's real or AT.

You can find those particular hues on some proof coinage like Barbers, but almost never on 90% silver MS coinage.

The coin looks natural, the toning doesn't

  • If it looks unatural...it probably is. Too deep on the lettering and too targeted.
