What the heck is back there? (2 Cent Variety?)

Ok folks,
The odd thing here is that this is under the "8" in 1865, so I can't believe it was a reworked die (unless they held onto one from 1799 or something image Any ideas?

Dwood - The "horn" on the right side of the 8 is common to many 1865 two centers. The loop inside the 8 appears to be an RPD. I don't have any references here (at work) but I could look it up when I get home at midnight.

  • Charles,
I'd appreciate it, as I have no RPD references other than the RedBook image (which does mention a reworked 4/5 for the 1865 2 center). Don't go to any trouble, but if you think of it nect time you have your book out, I'd appreciate it!

Not a problem at all...it'll take me three minutes to attribute it when I get there.

repunched 5 seen below the top of the 5

    REV.
die scratch from the middle of the D of united to the S of states
die scratch from teh 2 to the leaves above
    retooling shows on most letters

    cross reference BR2387, FL65p-9o1r
    est. value MS-60 - $90.00
    MS-65 RB-$470.00
    Rarity: scarce

Nice find!!! hope this helps, all info was found in the book by Kenin Flynn "getting your two cents worth"
  • WOW! mbbiker!

I think that's it! All the characteristics are there, except I don't see the die scratch on the reverse from the 2 to the leaves above. A close look at the obverse shows the repunched 1, 6, and especially the 5! Also, the die scratch from the D in United is pretty pronounced.

I'm torn on the grade, as it appears uncurculated, yet there is a very weak spot in the horizontal lines of the shield. The area is larger than I'm used to seeing, which leads me to lean more towards a high AU grade, but all the other areas of normal wear (and I know the shield isn't really one of those areas) look strongly MS (including "We"). This one may go off to PCGS. Especially if it proves to be the RPD you referenced.

    Thanks LOAD for the info!

the picture in the book looks exactly like the picture you posted so i'm almost positive that is the one you have. I don't know if PCGS would put this variety on the holder, i'm pretty sure ANACS would.
  • Nice job Biker.. I was thinking Breen#2384 but now that u mention it I think you are right.
