Cast your vote for a Coinguy1 thread - Updated

This topic was actually brought up previously by Clankeye in a previous thread about my 1000th post - that seems so long ago!

I try to post threads on topics that I think might be of interest and/or benefit to forum members. But, I don't always know what people would like to hear about, see or discuss here. So, I'm open to suggestions - let me know what you'd like to see posted.

I can't promise that I will be able to address or discuss what you want me to, but I'll give it a try.

Give me some ideas to work with and I'll go with the majority vote (and maybe the runner up at a later date). You can even vote that I not to a thread, if that's your preference. I await the board's vote. image

How about strike characteristics between a classic proof vs. mint state coin.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Maybe some of the most frequently couterfieted coins?

    Mark,

Several things would be interesting to me. How did you come to make this your business? When you were a collector, what did you keep? Are collectors surrendering the hobby to professionals? Type 1,2,3 dollar gold, long-term storage and preservation of copper color.

BTW - I'll be on a cruise till Monday, so take your time........image

Here's an interesting one that can be a challenge as well. You have $1000 to spend at a show and you want to only get coins that have a shot at appreciating. What do you buy?

Also, I sometimes have problems distinguishing between slight wear and a weak strike...Any help?

I really like your threads with pics of coins for members to comment/grade. I would like to see more of these. I would also love to see examples of what to look for (and what the differences are) in coins that have been whizzed, cleaned, or dipped, as compared to problem-free similar coins. That would be extremely beneficial to me as I have not seen enough quality examples to really know what to look for.

I would be most interested in some of your grading days at NGC. Maybe like when you decide to bag a coin for AT, did you talk about with co-workers first etc. etc.

As you know I could do without the threads on spelling, hidden profiles and such.

The 2 or the 20 cent piece are a couple that come to mind.

Like the 20 cent, are they known for heavy die polishing. I just got one for the set(common 75S) in a NGC58. I honestly thought it was harshly cleaned, yet a close look showed raised lines, Hmmmmmmmmm? That's my question for the day(week), then it's on to the next series.
Need something designed and 3D printed?

Mark, I have a hard time distinguishing whether a proof coin is a cameo or not and if it is a cameo, how do you tell the difference between a cameo and a deep cameo. As you know, I have cameo and deep cameo barber halves and morgans and the hardest for me is telling a cameo from a deep cameo. Even worse, are the proof shield nickels. Maybe you have a few tips??

  • I would second (or third) the motion for grading, your insight into the world of professional grading (i.e. practices, procedures, tips for submitting, etc.) Also, in this regard, a basic step by step guide, or checklist of how you arrive at a grade for a coin from the time you see it, through when you put it down when you are done. A checklist, or set of guidelines that all of us can follow every time we pick up a coin and look at it. Please include your thoughts on the "mental" approach to grading (i.e. should it be dispassionate, devoid of emotion, or some other mental "state")

Any and all help with grading may give us all insight.

    Thanks,

Yes, it's coin related because some guy had sex and got killed over it and I just put one of his Morgans in my NGC Registry Set.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Mark,
Why not discus the qualities you look for and what you avoid in purchase of special quality pre-1915 MS coins.
From our discussions I have a sense of those things that you weigh positively and those that turn you off in your selection process. If you have the images to do this you might take a series or even a single date in a series and show a half a dozen coins of the same label grade from a quality service and point out how you order them in desirability and marketability. While there is a degree of personal taste and some subjectivity you bring a great deal of experience to the process and have a great feel for what will be appreciated by the quality collectors. This beyond the label view would help others have a better feel for selection of the right coin at the right price.
This should set up a dialog of others on the forum of what they look for and what they are willing to ignore in their own selection process.

PS I arbitrarily selected the the period because it was the date Michael put forward and it avoids the issues of MS 67-70 modern coins which is a separate issue (for another day) in my mind.

Another vote for grading. Examples of various cleanings that would be rejected, etc. Thanks.
  • How about a thread on How a coin is produced, in old times and modern times which would go into double dies ,strikes, both MS and Proofs.

Try something like how one who deals primarily in high-end coins may or may not perceive or be perceived by collectors less inclined to afford the material you deal in.

In other words, inherent biases OR how you preclude them. I would like to hear that from a few of our more affluent members too.

I'll pile on the grading idea.

Two half dollars arrive at your grading table, both proofs, one is dated 1876; the other 1976. Do you apply the same standards regarding grade, strike, cameo, etc? or are they looked at differently because of the technology used to make them at their respective time?

    Mark,

I would like to see a discussion on pricing. In other words, what makes a coin worth a particular price. Especially when to pay a premium and how do you figure out what that premium should be. In particular, how to value a premium for cameo vs. non-cameo proof or proof-like coins, toned coins. What about split grade coins, do you just price at the lower grade?

I hope to post a thread on Monday or Tuesday of next week. At this point, based on the replies here, it looks like it will have something to do with grading.

Please feel free to make additional suggestions for sub-topics to be discussed.
  • Maybe I'm late to the thread, but on the topic of grading I'd aslo be interested in some discussion of weak strike vs wear.

    Thanks!
  • Wow,

enough topics for ten years of threads.
